National Bank Notes - Small

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 580
1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, Apache, OK. Charter #7127. PCGS Very Fine 25. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. This is by far the scarcer of the two banks in this Caddo County community, with this newly discovered example bringing the census to a total of just six small size notes reported. This is by far also the nicest of the known small size notes, with nothing else in the census grading above Fine. It's the first time in more than a decade that any small size note from this bank has appeared at auction, so any estimate is likely to be conservative as there are no recent sales to compare. Expect spirited bidding before one collector takes home this prize. Estimate Value $500 - 700

1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The State NB, Depew, OK. Charter #12104. PCGS Very Fine 30. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. This bank was the only issuer in this Creek County community, and its total issue amounted to only $65,330. Only seven surviving examples are confirmed in the census, and this example is both new to the census and ranks as perhaps the finest known. The last time a note from this town was offered at auction was more than eight years ago, a good assessment of how many opportunities are available for collectors to obtain a piece from here. Estimate Value $400 - 600

Lot 583
1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The Federal NB, Shawnee, OK. Charter #12339. PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. Although this bank is represented by 9 small size notes in the census, they are always in demand because of the "forbidden" bank title which was grandfathered in after the law was changed to disallow any National Banks with "official" sounding names that might confuse the public into believing that a bank might be a government institution. This note is new to the census, and is far above average in grade--in fact, it may very well be the single finest known, as the census doesn't list a single piece above the VF grade. Estimate Value $250 - 350

1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The Union NB, Chandler, OK. Charter #6269. PCGS New 61 Apparent. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. 1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The First NB, Chandler, OK. Charter #5354. PCGS Very Fine 30. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. Small size notes from this bank are available due to small run of $20s that was saved at the time of issue, but $10s are legitimately rare; this solid mid-grade piece is just the third recorded surviving example. Estimate Value $150 - 200

1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The Union NB, Chandler, OK. Charter #6269. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. A moderately circulated example from this bank that had only $50,000 outstanding in 1935. The PCGS Currency label notes "minor stains," a somehat trivial flaw on this piece. Estimate Value $150 - 200

1929 Type 2, $10 National Bank Note. The NB of Commerce, Altus, OK. Charter #13756. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Fr-1801-2. KL-1244. This late chartered bank only issued small size Type 2 notes, and this one is new to the census. The PCGS Currency label notes a small puncture hole just to the left of the portrait, which is likely a spindle hole from decades ago--perhaps when the note was impaled on an upturned nail on a general store counter in Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma, to keep it from blowing away. Estimate Value $125 - 150

1929 Type 2, $20 National Bank Note. First NB, Ardmore, OK. Charter #13677. PCGS Very Fine 35PPQ. Fr-1802-2. KL-1318. This bank was chartered in April, 1933, during the depths of the Great Depression, and replaced the similarly named charter #12472. Only small size Type 2 notes were issued, and this stellar, lightly circulated example is new to the census which now numbers 16 survivors. Estimate Value $400 - 500

Lot 594
1929 Type 1, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Tom Bean, TX. Charter #11019. PCGS Very Good 8 Apparent. Fr-1802-1. KL-1317. The census has remained static at 10 small size notes reported for more than a decade, although this piece now bumps the total reported to 11. It has a number of rust stains visible that came from too-long storage with a paperclip attached, but it is otherwise whole and solid for the grade. There are never enough notes to supply the demand for examples from this bank, which is the only issuing institution in this town that has always been near the top of collector want lists due to its interesting nomenclature. Tom Bean was a surveyor from Bonham, and he donated a fifty-acre tract for a townsite and railroad right-of-way in Grayson County. Estimate Value $400 - 500

1929 Type 2, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Chandler, OK. Charter #5354. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. Fr-1802-2. KL-1318. This is one of three high grade Twenties from this bank offered here, obviously from a small group that was kept many years ago. This example is a lovely near-Gem with characteristically uneven top and bottom edges, a quaint feature of many Nationals from this era which were issued in hurried circumstances that resulted in scissorless cashiers simply tearing the notes by hand from the sheets. Estimate Value $350 - 450

This high grade example has boardwalk margins and outstanding originality, and bears a much higher serial number than any of the other recorded Type 2 $20s in the census. Estimate Value $350 - 450

1929, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Hancock, NY. Charter #8613. PCGS Very Fine 35PPQ. Fr-1802-1. KL-1317. This was the sole issuer in this small Delaware County community. Although a couple dozen small size examples are known from here, this is one of the higher grade pieces reported in the census. It has bold embossing and fully original surfaces. Estimate Value $300 - 400

1929 Type 2, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Chandler, OK. Charter #5354. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. Fr-1802-2. KL-1318. A lovely note with terrific originality and embossing, although the hard-torn margins are just a little too tight for a higher grade. Estimate Value $250 - 350

1929 Type 2, $20 National Bank Note. The Citizens NB, Anthony, KS. Charter #6752. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Fr-1802-2. KL-1318. This note is from a Harper County bank that is seldom seen in high grade. The PCGS Currency holder notes some pinholes and a bit of minor soiling, but neither flaw hurts the appearance all that much. 1929 Type 2, $20 National Bank Note. The First NB, Cushing, OK. Charter #6893. PCGS Very Fine 25. Fr-1802-2. KL-1318. This nice VF example has better margins than the $10 from the same bank here offered, although a single unobtrusive pinhole near the upper right corner is noticeable through the crystal clear PCGS Currency holder. 1929 Type 2, $100 National Bank Note. Bank of America NT & SA, San Francisco, CA. Fr-1804-2. KL-1438. There are less than 400 Type 2 $100 small size Nationals in the census from the entire country, although about 45% of the survivors nationwide come from this bank. It’s a scarce type regardless, and one that’s always in demand from type note collectors. Estimate Value $250 - 300
