1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 PCGS graded VG10, CAC Approved. Rather glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. An attractive example for the grade, smooth with only a few contact marks. The notable ones are a dull nick in the field off the tip of the nose, an old scratch left of the L in LIBERTY, and a couple old marks under OF. The marks all blend into the natural toning and do not detract from the eye appeal, which is excellent for the grade. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. The date is strong and the overdate feature is obvious. 1803 C-2 R4 PCGS graded VF30. PCGS graded VF-30. Glossy dark chocolate brown delicately mottled with small splashes of slightly lighter steel brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are perfectly smooth except for traces of microscopic roughness in the field before the neck. A thin nick or pre-striking planchet chip in the center of the bust and a very thin nick on the nose are the only marks. A shallow depression, possibly caused by debris or grease on the die, covers much of the field behind the portrait. However, the planchet weight is only 77.4 grains, which is significantly lighter than the standard of 84.0 grains, so it is possible that the planchet was thin in that area before striking. But since the reverse is fully struck in the opposing area, the debris theory seems the more reasonable one. Regardless, this is a beautiful example of a tough die variety. EDS, Manley state 2.0 early, with a fine die crack through the top of ATES but before the die cracks at OF and MERIC. Our grade is VF25. Called CC#5 in the Mike Spurlock census. Noyes photo #73616. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer, 1 in 40, 1 in 55 for the variety. (PCGS # 35131) Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1804 C-3 (C-5 early, Without Spike From Chin) R7- PCGS Fine Details, Damage or Tooling. Sharpness at least VG8 by our standards but there are numerous scratches on both sides. Most are very fine hairline scratches of minor importance, but there are some stronger ones on the obverse, particularly along the dentils and rim under the date. Glossy dark steel brown. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The smooth (unspiked) chin feature is clear. The reverse is plated on page 232 of the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate the variety (which in reality is an early die state of the C-5 variety, or, said another way, C-5 is a late state of the C-3 variety). The exact cause of the "Spike" is uncertain. Obviously something (perhaps a small screw) came between the obverse die and a planchet during a strike early in this marriage (die pairing) causing significant damage to the obverse die. Fortunately the die survived and went on to perform adequately in three more marriages before retirement (C-6, 7, and 8). Our grade is VG8+ sharpness net G6. One of only 2 examples known of the C-3/5 variety without the "Spiked Chin" when the Breen book was written, but about a dozen are known today. Most are in low grade with only a single piece grading better than F12. The attribution (as "C-5 No Spike") and Missouri Cabinet provenance are shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 35152) Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

Lot 81
1805 C-2 R5 Small 5 with Stems F12. Sharpness VF20 but the hair details were carefully strengthened to "improve" the grade. Lightly burnished and nicely retoned glossy steel and medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and free of any marks. Nicely struck EDS with only a faint hint of swelling in the field before the portrait. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. This half cent offers excellent eye appeal in spite of the hair strengthening and retoning. The finest known example of this rarity grades only VF and most have significant problems. Another F12 brought $41,400 in our sale of the Ray Rouse collection (9/14/2008:69). This piece is clearly in the condition census and it is the plate coin for the variety in the Manley book on US Half Cents. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP
