1800 C-1 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous mix of tan, bluish steel, and light chocolate brown with a few subtle puffs of darker olive brown toning on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and the eye appeal is excellent. The best identifying mark is a small spot of golden tan toning inside a puff of darker toning over the upper end of the hair ribbon. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. Die lapping has weakened the curl left of the date and a narrow rim cud shows over LIB. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1802/0 C-1 R6 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1800 PCGS AG Details, Damaged. Struck over a Spoiled Large Cent. Sharpness VG7 in some areas and only AG3 in others, but this piece has some obvious marks. The most serious of these marks is a small, crude puncture near the dentils off the lower end of the hair ribbon. There are three smaller digs in the center of the obverse plus another in the field off the chin. Daylight does not show through the puncture, but it certainly catches your eye. The small digs on the obverse were strong enough to cause two tiny bumps at the opposing areas on the reverse. The marks are obvious and certainly affect the eye appeal, but there are some positive aspects to this piece as well. The surfaces are smooth, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. The date is clear (including the overdate), as is everything else except for the bust tip and ES-OF-AMER, which are weak or missing (the strike is always weaker in those areas on this variety). The reverse details clearly identify this as the "Reverse of 1800" style. Slightly glossy chocolate and dark steel brown. Struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent with "ON" or "OF" showing below the 18 in the date. The "O" is clear but only the left top of the next letter is visible, and it could be an "N" or "F" ("N" is my choice). EDS, Manley state 1.0. Far from perfect, but the relatively strong details are a big plus for this extremely rare and popular variety. Weight 77.1 grains. Our grade is net AG3. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Only 3 graded for the variety at PCGS. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

The surfaces are smooth except for a small patch of very fine roughness at the top of the hair ribbon and a smaller spot of corrosion hidden in the hair at the forehead. Otherwise this piece is choice and the eye appeal remains excellent. Nicely struck E-MDS Manley state 2.0, with a couple radial die lines between the I & B in LIBERTY. The date is bold and the overdate feature is obvious. The legends are strong. Struck with the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is F15. The surfaces are smooth and show only minor contact marks consistent with the grade, but there is an obvious planchet lamination affecting ES-OF-AME (as struck). A portion of the lamination at ES-OF has peeled away (delaminated) but the affected letters remain readable. Otherwise the date and legends are strong and the overdate is obvious. 1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 PCGS graded F15. Medium steel and chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks scattered over both sides. The notable marks are a dull "boomerang-shaped" scratch in the field left of the hair ribbon, a nearly horizontal nick in the field before the neck, and a dull nick on the 0 in the date. MDS, Manley state 3.0, with die rust scattered over both sides (tiny lumps on the coin). The curl left of the date is open thanks to die lapping. Struck with the reverse properly aligned head-to-foot. A decent example of this popular overdate variety in spite of the minor marks, and it is superior to the plate coin for the 3.0 die state in the Manley reference on the half cent series. 1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1803 PCGS graded VF20. Slightly glossy medium steel and chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No corrosion, but traces of fine dirt are visible around the date and LIBERTY. There are myriad faint hairline scratches on the portrait and in the field left of the hair ribbon, but you need a glass to see them. The only marks visible to the unaided eye are a small rim nick over the Y in LIBERTY and another at UN in UNITED. Very rare LDS, Manley state 5.0, with a rim cud break from the second A in AMERICA to below the second 0 in the denominator. In addition there is a thin rim cud over UNI and a fine but clearly visible die crack through the tops of IC to above the letters on either side. 1803 C-2 R4 PCGS graded VF30. Glossy dark chocolate brown delicately mottled with small splashes of slightly lighter steel brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are perfectly smooth except for traces of microscopic roughness in the field before the neck. A thin nick or pre-striking planchet chip in the center of the bust and a very thin nick on the nose are the only contact marks. A shallow depression, possibly caused by debris or grease on the die, covers much of the field behind the portrait. However, the planchet weight is only 77.4 grains, which is significantly lighter than the standard of 84.0 grains, so there is a possibility the planchet was thin in that area. Since the reverse is fully struck in the opposing area, the debris theory seems the more reasonable one. Regardless, this is a beautiful example of a tough die variety. EDS, Manley state 2.0 early, with a fine die crack through the top of ATES but before the die cracks at OF and MERIC. Our grade is VF25. Called CC#5 in the Mike Spurlock census. Noyes photo #73616. No verdigris and only minor contact marks, including several tiny pinpricks in the field above the bust. Recolored a mostly glossy chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones. The date is weak but easily readable and the legends are complete except for the I in UNITED, which is gone (the left edge of the reverse is always weakly struck on this variety). This piece appears to have been struck normally and then struck a second time way off center creating a tab on the rim left of the lower curls. It appears the die struck the obverse rim while the opposing reverse rim was pressed into a new planchet. The tab was eventually tapped down to make the piece round and more acceptable in commerce at that time. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late. 1804 C-3 (C-5 early, Without Spike From Chin) R7- PCGS Fine Details, Damage or Tooling. Sharpness at least VG8 by our standards but there are numerous scratches on both sides. Most are very fine hairline scratches of minor importance, but there are some stronger ones on the obverse, particularly along the dentils under the date and along the rim in both directions. Glossy dark steel brown. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The smooth (unspiked) chin feature is clear. The reverse is plated on page 232 of the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate the variety (which in reality is an early die state of the C-5 variety, or, said another way, C-5 is a late state of the C-3 variety). The exact cause of the "Spike" is uncertain. Obviously something (perhaps a small screw) came between the obverse die and a planchet during a strike early in this marriage (die pairing) causing significant damage to the obverse die. Fortunately the die survived and went on to perform adequately in three more marriages before retirement (C-6, 7, and 8). Our grade is VG8+ sharpness net G6. One of only 2 examples known of the C-3/5 variety without the "Spiked Chin" when the Breen book was written, but about a dozen are known today. 1804 C-7 R4 Spiked Chin VF20. Double Struck over Obverse Brockage. At least ten points sharper but there is a significant scrape on the rim at ICA, several tiny pinpricks in the field left of the lower curls, a dull scratch hidden in the hair right of the ribbon, and a couple specks of reddish verdigris at the O in OF. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and free of notable marks. Glossy olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. Very rare EDS, Manley state 1.0 without any die cracks on the reverse. This piece was struck two times. The first strike was an obverse brockage and the second strike was normal. The incuse obverse brockage impression from the first strike is located on the reverse of the second strike. The incuse LIBERTY is visible through the denominator, and Ms Liberty's curls show under ATES. The second strike on the obverse was shifted only slightly relative to the first, but clear doubling shows at the throat, forehead, and off the bust tip. A sharp example of an extremely rare type of mint error. This is a very tough die variety; being double struck over an obverse brockage just makes it better. Estimate Value $1,250 - UP
