1803 C-1 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with lustrous golden steel brown toning covering the protected areas. Great eye appeal with just a touch of rub on the highest points of the devices. None of these marks is distracting. LDS, Manley state 3.0. All the die cracks described by Manley are clearly visible on the reverse and there is a small but clearly defined rim cud over the M in AMERICA that is not mentioned in the Manley reference. 1803 C-2 R4 PCGS Genuine, XF details, Cleaning. Sharpness VF25 but the obverse is covered with microscopic hairline scratches, as are the reverse highpoints. The scratches are old and blend perfectly into the toning, so you will need a glass to see them. The notable marks are a spot of darker toning at the base of the 1 in the date and another at the right side of the H in HALF. Nice glossy light to medium chocolate brown, and the toning is totally original (so the "Cleaning" assessment by PCGS refers to the hairlines). LDS, Manley state 7.0, with a strong cud break at STAT. Our grade is VF25 net F15+. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but certainly one of the finest known in the terminal die state. Comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Missouri Cabinet Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

There are several small but obvious digs on the cheek and front edge of the neck, plus a few more at the E in LIBERTY. Extremely rare LDS, Manley state 3.0, with a strong cud break at ERTY and the reverse rotated 25 degrees CW. The strike is weaker on the left edge of both sides, as usual, while the details on the right sides are consistent with a considerably higher grade. Plated on page 230 in the Breen reference to illustrate his die state III and listed in his census on page 231. Our grade is G5+ sharpness net G4. The attribution and Missouri Cabinet Collection provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1807 C-1 R1 EF40. Glossy dark steel brown with reddish brown toning in protected areas. A tiny nick on the eyebrow, another in the middle of the neck, and a shallow low spot under the first T in STATES (as struck) are the only marks worthy of any mention. Extremely rare earliest die state, Manley state 1.0 early, with fine die clashmarks on the obverse and sharp dentils all the way around the obverse. There are strong die polishing lines in the field down from the chin and others connecting the bust to the dentils below. (Breen noted in his discussion of die state II that an example with obverse die clashmarks and strong dentils was unknown, but that one probably existed. This piece proves he was correct. See the Breen half cent encyclopedia, page 278.) The reverse is rotated 10 degrees CCW. Plated in the second edition of the Cohen half cent book to illustrate the early die state (page 65). 1811 C-1 R7 (as a die state) PCGS Genuine, Fine Details, Tooled. Sharpness F12 but burnished to remove microscopic roughness. Faint traces of roughness remain visible in the protected areas while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris and the only mark is a small planchet chip over the F in HALF. Retoned an attractive glossy light chocolate brown. Extremely rare LDS, Manley state 4.0, with a bold cud break at stars 1 & 2. The date is strong and the legends are clear. This is the Manley plate coin for the die state in his reference on the Half Cent series. Our grade is F12 sharpness net VG8. This example is far superior to either of the 2 examples in the famous Missouri Cabinet Collection (sold in our 2 "Davy" sales; 9/19/2010:305 and 9/4/2011:395). Fewer than 10 examples are known with the 2-Star cud break, and most of those are in very low grade. A great opportunity for the half cent specialist. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. The remainder of the planchet is smooth, and the reverse is nearly flawless. Glossy dark chocolate and olive mixed with lighter brown and chocolate tones on the obverse. Extremely rare LDS, Manley state 4.0. A strong cud break covers most of stars 4 & 5 and connects them to the rim.
