Lot 340		Phoenician, 3rd-2nd Century BC. Sand Core Glass Alabastron. This early glass vessel has a straight-sided, fusiform body with convex, pointed base and small, circular mouth over a slightly rounded shoulder. Fashioned of deep cobalt blue glass, the surface bears an applied opaque white marvered thread which spirals around the entire length of the vessel, tooled into a festoon pattern over the body. Twin handles are applied near the top of the top of the body. Some chips at the rim, and repairs evident through the body. Height: 4½". Cf. Lot 341		Roman Silvery-blue Glass Rhyton. Ca. 1st century A.D. Length: 7¼". Horn-shaped vessel, tapering at end. Uniform light silvery-blue iridescence. Superb condition. Intact. On a custom, clear Lucite stand. Rhyton were usually used at banquets, since liquid poured into it must be finished at once. Lot 345		Roman-Judaea, Amber Date Glass Flask. Ca. late 1st-early 2nd century A.D. Height: 3". The body blown into a two-part mould to resemble the wrinkled skin of the date. In perfect intact condition, further enhanced by the magnificent natural, silvery iridescence. On a custom clear Lucite stand. A popular motif from the Bar Kokhba period, relating directly to the holiday of Sukkot, Feast of the Tabernacles. This was the most popular Jewish holiday in ancient times. The date palm tree is depicted on the bronze coins of the period. In Leviticus the Jews are commanded to "take ye on the first day the fruit of goodly trees…and ye shall rejoice…." Lot 352		Roman Bronze Eagle Appliqué With Detailed Wings. Ca. 2nd-3rd century A.D. Approximately 2.2 inches high by 2 inches wide. Eagle with raised head and spread wings. Head facing right, with defined "dotted eye." Flat back and extended mounting pin. Likely served as an appliqué for a vessel, or as an element in Roman armor. Amber glass bottle with spherical body and cylindrical neck which is slightly constricted where it meets the body and flares at the rim. Subtly curved ribs encircle the body to lend additional visual interest to this delicate vessel. Passages of lavender and pale green iridescence. Lot 358		Roman Judaea, 2nd-4th Century AD., Pale Green Bottle with Violet Trailed Thread Decoration Along the Neck. Pale green glass bottle with nearly spherical body, slightly concave at the base, and cylindrical neck subtly widening to the rim, which is only vaguely flared. Trailed thread decoration spirals around the central third of the neck, and has developed a striking iridescence. Passages of the body are likewise opalized, revealing sparkling, pearlized hues of peach, pink, lavender, blue, and green. Intact. Height: 5 1/8". Lot 367		Roman Judea, 3rd-4th Century AD, Wide-Mouthed Glass Jar with Trailed Thread Decoration. Fashioned from blown, colorless glass, this twin-handled jar is characterized by a flattened ovoid body, short neck, and wide, funnel mouth with thick, rounded rim and folded flange beneath. Two thick, applied and folded handles appear at the sides, along with a neatly trailed, thin thread encircling the body. Jar with black iridescence, revealing vivid and intense areas of silvery blue, violet, deep lime, and bluish green. Well crafted. Height: 2 3/8". Cf. Newark, nos. 475 and 478. Lot 370		Roman Bronze Armor Belt Fitting Plaque With Dionysus. Ca. 3rd-4th century A.D. Approximately 2.5 inches wide by 2.4 inches high. A complete example of a Roman bronze belt fitting plaque type segment, which was a component of a Roman belt. A standing nude Dionysus (Bacchus to the Romans) is seen leaning right and is holding a thyrsus in his left hand, and pouring a wine offering into the ground from an oinochoe in his right hand. A thyrsus was a beneficent wand of Bacchus and also a weapon used to destroy those opposed to his cult. The Roman soldier who wore this may have been a member of his cult. Back side has four round studs that attached the piece to a thick leather backing, which also served as the inner layer of the belt, which may have supported a sword and scabbard. The right side has two round elongated hooks that likely fit into a pin and/or another segment of the entire belt. Lot 372		Roman Judaea, 3rd-5th Century AD, Monumental Light Green Double-Balsamarium. Robustly made from a thick, rimmed tube folded over and heat joined, with large looping tiers of handles added. Aside from the usual discreet repairs (only detectable under a black light) to the handle, piece beautifully preserved. Holding and regarding this piece, one is brought to mind of some utilitarian object made of icicles! Rare this choice. Height: 9". Lot 373		Roman Judaea, 3rd-5th Century AD., Colorful Bale-Handled Balsamarium. Light green glass for the body and handle, with the decorative trailing threads around in purplish aubergine colored glass. Three discreet repairs to the bale, plus a small section of the side handle is missing. Overall preservation is choice with variegated iridescence ranging from matte and transparent to opaque silver with areas flashing of vivid violets and cobalts. An eye catching object of antiquity. Lot 384		Greek Apulian Knob-Handled Patera Plate: Ex Ganymede Painter. Beautiful, extra-large Greek Apulian ceramic, ca. 340-330 B.C. Approximately 18.2 inches wide from handle to handle and 6.5 inches high. Attributed to the Ganymede Painter. Super, intact example, 100% original. Superb to mint quality, save for some minor glaze checking on the inside surface and some minor and minute stress cracks. In "as found" condition, with vibrant black, dark orange, yellow, and white colors. Two decorative, black, raised handles are attached on each side of the raised flat rim and there are four raised knobs attached to the flat rim. The center of the plate has a draped woman, seated on a rock, holding a plate and floral garland. She is facing a standing nude youth with an open box, holding a wreath in his right hand. Both figures are seen on a "dot-and-egg" pattern band below a minute "dotted" ground line, and the entire scene is within a sacred white olive-leaf wreath that frames the entire scene. Underside of plate has a black reserve, with a raised footed base. The Ganymede painter was one of the most accomplished Greek Apulian artists during the second half of the 4th century B.C. Lot 385		Excellent Greek Apulian Lidded Mug: Ex Kantharos Group. Ca. 310 B.C. Approximately 8.25 inchces high with the lid. Attributed to the Kantharos Group. Mint quality, with no repairs/restoration, with vibrant white, yellow, red, and black colors. Rounded knobbed handle at top center of lid. Two female heads on top of lid, along with a detailed acanthus pattern between. A large female head is on the main body of the vessel, facing left, along with the top section of a white and red wing which is curling up at the front of her face. The female head is wearing a detailed sakkos in her hair, which is highlighted with dotted and cross patterns, and is also wearing an elaborate earring and dotted necklace. This figure likely represents a winged Eros. This portrait type is also known as a "lady of fashion" and is thought to represent Demeter and/or Persephone. This vessel probably held a burial offering, such as grain, to be used by the deceased in the afterlife. Lot 387		Rare Archaic Greek Marble Griffon "Table Leg" Trapezophoros. Rare Greek marble is the upper torso of a griffon, ca. 6th-5th century B.C. Approximately 14.5 inches high by 5 inches wide by 8.25 inches deep. With custom wooden stand, the height is 17.75 inches. Quite heavy; it rotates on the stand with a thick metal support pin. Light brown patina. Some chips to the mouth and to the right ear; otherwise the bust of the griffon is nearly complete. Also missing the lower third section that was usually in the form of a lion's leg with a lion's paw-footed base. The griffon is the rarest trapezophoros type, panther and lion heads being more common. For the ancient Greeks, the griffon symbolized the destroying power of the gods, and during the 5th-4th century B.C., it came to represent an anti-Persian symbol. Alexander the Great's army sported the griffon on its armor at the battle of Gaugamela in 331 B.C. when they crushed the Persian army. Lot 388		Large Greco-Thracian Silver Bowl With Floral Design. Ca. 4th-3rd century B.C. Approximately 9 inches in diameter by 4 inches high. The bowl is intact, with a dark gray patina and multi-colored iridescence on some sections. Hand-beaten "floral pattern" on outer side. Rolled edge folds towards the inside and was heat-sealed. An attached single silver "ring handle" on one side near the top rim may have been used for hanging. The ancient Thracians and Scythians valued vessels made from precious metals. The artistic style of this piece points to the region that runs around the eastern and northern coasts of the Black Sea.
