Lot 1509
1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Octagonal. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. The obverse depicts the Greek goddess Athena with her helmet tipped back on her head. The date is placed in an arc over her shoulder in Roman numerals. The central designs are surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIFTY DOLLARS. The octagonal design allows for eight small dolphins near the corners. The reverse is intricate and stylized as well, with a large owl dominating the center perched on a Jeffrey pine branch with cones. The central designs of the reveres are encirculed by PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION and SAN FRANCISCO. Eight small dolphins swim in circles at each of the corners of the coin. The strike is sharp and the luster is full. Although 1,500 pieces were authorized and struck, sales were slow and only 645 pieces were sold, thus the balance of the coins were melted. One of the rarest 20th Century commemorative coins and always in high demand once the rarity of this issue and elegance of the design was widely discovered and appreciated by numismatists. Comes in the original black box of issue. A type coin that is always in demand. Only 645 struck (PCGS # 7452) Estimate Value $35,000 - 40,000
