Although the precise location of Damastion remains a mystery today, at least its regional boundaries were known to the Greek geographer Strabo who mentions it in his famous Geography, written during the principate of Augustus. He says that there was an alliance of two Illyro-Paeonian tribes, the Dyestae and Enchelii, who had established themselves around the silver mines of Damastion (VII, 7. 326). It was these tribes, then, who were responsible for this coinage, and the only two magistrate's mentioned on the coins of Damastion before it was subsumed by the growing economic dominance of the Macedonian Kingdom of Philip II and Alexander III were Herakleidas and, as here, Kephisophon. They did so only at the very end of the period before the mint ceased to exist.

From the Lee Rousseau Collection; Ex Leu 77 (12 May 2000), 197; Auctiones 16 (16 October 1986), 121; Charles Gillet Collection; MMAG XIX (5 June 1959), 411; Gustav Philipsen Collection (Hirsch XXV, 29 November 1909), 764; Vicomte de Sartiges Collection.
Alexander the Molossian was the king of Epeiros and an uncle of Alexander the Great. A protégé of Philip II, it was at Alexander's wedding to his own neice, Cleopatra, that the king of Macedonia was assassinated. In 334 BC, the citizens of Taras called on Alexander to assist them in fighting the native tribes of southern Italy, the Lucani and the Bruttii. This silver nomos was struck at that time in order to pay his troops, perhaps at Taras itself or in the nearby Bruttian town of Lokroi. Vlasto attributed Alexander's production of silver to an Epirote mint, but examples are never found there, known find spots being located only in southern Italy.

Papaevangelou-Genakos 1; BCD Thessaly II 581 (same dies). Rare. Fine style and head struck in high relief. Lightly toned. Very Fine. Estimate Value $400 - 500
From the Lee Rousseau Collection; Leu, Lot 193 16, May 2001 (same dies).
The drachm coinage of Phalanna is actually quite rare, especially in this condition. The similarity of the youthful male head on the obverse to that of the head of Apollo found on the gold staters of Philip II suggests that it may have been copied from the latter. However, the precise identity of the head has never been confirmed: the lack of a wreath makes it more likely that it is mean to be Ares instead of Apollo.

Pontic Sinope was founded by Milesian colonists as a center for trade on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor in the seventh century BC. It served as the seaport for a caravan route that extended south to Mesopotamia and trafficked in grain, luxury goods, and a red earth pigment used throughout the Greek world for painting. This hematite-rich earth was known as sinopia or "Sinopic earth" after the city that exported it, but it was actually mined in the neighboring region of Cappadocia rather than in the environs of Sinope. In the fourth century BC the civic badge of Sinope was a seabird clutching a dolphin, but on earlier drachms only the head appears and if the dolphin is present at all it is as a small subsidiary symbol.

From the Lee Rousseau Collection.
Founded by Aitolians on the site believed to have been the ruins of Troy, the city of Ilion prospered during the last few centuries BC. With the collapsed of Seleukid rule in the region in 189 BC, like many other cities Ilion minted it's own autonomous coins beginning with these attractive broad-flan tetradrachms featuring the goddess Athena on both the obverse and reverse. The official listed in the exergue of the reverse on this coin is, interestingly, not technically a moneyer but rather simply an influential and wealthy citizen of Ilion who financed this particular issue of the coinage from his own personal wealth. In exchange for his generosity he was recognized by the city by having his name engraved into the die.

From the Lee Rousseau Collection; Ex Kirk Davis FPL 25 (Winter 1999), 64; Sotheby's, London (9 October 1995), 151; Mugla Hoard.
Maussollos was perhaps one of the most famous of the Hekatomnid dynasts of Caria who nominally served the Great King of Persia as regional satrap. He briefly participated in the Great Satraps' Revolt (366-360 BC) against Artaxerxes III but soon returned to the side of his Persian master, expanding his territory to include parts of Lycia, Ionia, and several islands. He embraced Greek culture and increasingly involved himself in Greek affairs, instigating and supporting Rhodian involvement in the Social War (357-355 BC) against Athens. Maussollos is perhaps most famous for his great tomb which he built at Halikarnassos after moving his capital from Mylasa. This tomb was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world and gave us the term mausoleum in English. The reverse depicts Zeus Labraundos, the patron deity of Mylasa and the Hekatomnid dynasty. Ironically it was in the god's temple at Labranda that assassins attempted to kill Maussollos in 353 BC.

Seleukid Kingdom. Seleukos I Nikator. Silver Tetradrachm (17.20 g), 312-281 BC. Susa, ca. 305/4-295 BC. Head of hero right (assimilating Seleukos I, Alexander the Great and Dionysos), wearing helmet covered with panther's skin and adorned with bull's horns and ears. Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣEΛEYKOY, Nike standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; below wings, AP and ΠA monogram respectively; between Nike and trophy, radiate head of Helios facing. SC 173.16; HGC 9, 20. Untoned and lusterous. A numismatic masterpiece! Mint State. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP
It is readily apparent that the reverse design of this coin showing Nike placing a wreath upon a trophy she has erected commemorates Seleukos' recent victories in the Upper Satrapies and his assumption of the royal title in 305 BC. What is less certain is the identification of the head on the obverse. Hadley argues for an assimilation of Alexander the Great with Dionysos, while Hoover sees a portrait of Seleukos himself, with the divine attributes of Dionysos. For full discussion, see R. A. Hadley, "Seleucus, Dionysus, or Alexander?" NC 1974, pp. 9-13, and Oliver D. Hoover, "The identity of the helmeted head on the 'Victory' coinage of Susa," SNR 81, 2002, pp. 51-60.
