Trajan, AD 98-117. AE Sestertius, mint of Rome AD 116. Laureate and draped bust of Trajan, right. Reverse: REX PARTHIS DATVS SC. Trajan seated left on high platform accompanied by officer, placing diadem on the head of king Parthamaspates who stands before him beside platform; Parthia kneeling right in supplication before. RIC 667; BMC 1046; C-328. Attractive uniform glossy reddish-brown patina. The fields show signs of smoothing, nonetheless, rare and very desirable. Sharpness of Extremely Fine.

The reverse depicts the investiture of Parthamaspates as king of Parthia in AD 116. He was to enjoy his position for only a short time, as Roman forces soon after withdrew from Parthia and Trajan died the following year.

Hadrian, AD 117-138. AE Dupondius minted at Rome, AD 119-121. Radiate head right of Hadrian with drapery on left shoulder. Reverse: Virtus standing right, holding spear and parazonium; left foot on helmet. RIC 605; BMC 1240; C. 1470. A fantastic example of this denomination; glossy dark green patina. Extremely Fine.

The chief distinctions of the dupondius from that of the as are the radiate crown and in its metallic composition. Akin to the sestertii of the period, the dupondii were also struck in orichalcum, a kind of brass. When minted, both denominations were of a bright golden-yellow color and must have dazzled their owners. Nearly two thousand years of resting in the soil created a visually different "look" to these survivors of the greatness that was Rome.

Mint-caused "push of thumb" at 6 o'clock; edge is perfect, not wavy. Both sides needle-sharp with a beautiful high-relief portrait. Nearly Mint State.

With such a lengthy obverse inscription, the mint worker could only scrawl a pseudo "PP" at the conclusion of the legend.

The selection of Hilaritas as the reverse type reflects the rejoicing of the times. Also, there was a yearly Roman festival, the Hilaria, which celebrated the spring equinox and the Mother of the Gods, Cybele.

This truly rare denarius, especially in this grade and quality of striking, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Actium, and is certainly one of the finest examples known. Since the types are copied from an earlier issue, it is called a restitution emission.

Along with a current war in Britain, Commodus had to contend with an adulterous and plotting wife. Crispina was banished to Capri and murdered there on orders of Commodus in AD 183. Her aurei are quite rare.
