1856-S. PCGS graded AU-58. Partially lustrous yellow-gold with lively mint frost in the most protected areas. A tiny die defect is noted at bottom of second L in DOLLAR, this being seen on several others we have cataloged. No serious marks are present, only light wear from a short time in circulation. The '56-S is a scarcer date in the series and highly collectible. Pop 29; 12 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7975) .

1879. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. CAC Approved. Rare low mintage date as a mere 3,000 business strikes were minted. This splendid gem specimen, probably from the famed Beck hoard that appeared at auction in the 1970s, glitters with intense semi-reflective mint luster. This beauty will undoubtedly be treasured by its new owner. Pop 40; 6 finer, 5 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 8001) .

Lot 1919
1888. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC Approved. Despite a mintage of 5,000 circulation strikes, the 1888 three dollar gold piece is relatively easy to locate in Mint State through the MS-64 plateau. David Bowers (2005) suggests that this is "probably reflective of fewer being melted at the Mint." Gems, on the other hand, are scarcer, and anything finer (such as this coin) is quite elusive. Glowing luster emanates from both sides of this superior Gem, and each is endowed with rich peach-gold patination. A decisive strike results in sharp definition on the design elements. Coupled with these attributes are impeccably preserved surfaces that reveal just a couple of microscopic marks. The CAC label aptly recognizes the technical quality and aesthetic appeal of this lovely piece. Pop 32; 3 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67. (PCGS # 8010) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

Lot 1920
1888. PCGS graded MS-65+. CAC Approved. A splendid untoned gem example of this scarce low mintage date as only 5000 were struck. The surfaces screem with semi-reflective mint luster. To be able to offer two gem specimens in the same sale is unheard of. Pop 5; 35 finer (PCGS # 8010) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

Lot 1921
1888. PCGS graded MS-65. The 1888 gold three dollar has a business strike mintage of just 5,000 pieces, 291 proofs were also coined in this penultimate year for this denomination. It is genuinely scarce in all grades, even despite the fact that an unknown number of coins were saved by contemporary collectors at the time. This is one of the nicest examples we have seen, a coin characterized by billowy mint luster and soft yellow-golden color. Sharply defined, with no distracting abrasions or other blemishes in evidence. Pop 84; 39 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8010) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Lot 1922
1888. PCGS graded Proof 61. CAC Approved. When studying proof mintages for three dollar gold coins, the (high) mintage for the 1888, 291 pieces, is almost double that of the next highest in the entire series. Further research with PCGS Population figures shows a total of 129 pieces have been graded there; 94 at NGC. PCGS estimates 150 to 200 pieces are known, therefore we feel the mintage figure is accurate accounting for normal losses over the years, and likely resubmissions between both services. The fields on this piece are nicely reflective, and there is even a slight bit of contrast against the devices as is normal for this issue. Light hairlining, scuffing, and a few small contact marks account for the grade, but the overall appearance is above-average for the grade. Pop 3; 84 finer (PCGS # 8052) .
Estimated Value $5,800 - 6,000.

Lot 1923
1889. ANACS graded Proof 50 Details, Cleaned. Unfortunately, this proof example was spent at one time and entered circulation long enough to acquire some visible wear. The surfaces remain a yellow-gold color with some hints of reflectiveness in the most protected areas of the design. Only 129 Proof three dollar gold pieces were coined for collectors at Philadelphia in this, the final year for the denomination. Many of these coins survive, but with an estimated population of just 85-95 pieces, the proof 1889 remains an undeniably rare issue.
Estimated Value $2,100 - 2,200.
