Lot 1722
1908. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Rich shades of golden toning. Virtually superb for the grade. Almost every new issue meets with some form of protest from self-proclaimed art experts; and Bela Lyon Pratt's distinctive Indian Head Half Eagle was no exception. According to Breen, who did extensive research on the series, "Pratt's designs at once came under attack, probably because of their unfamiliar conception [their recessed relief design]. One of their severest critics was the Philadelphia coin dealer Samuel Hudson Chapman, who falsely alleged that the designs were antinaturalistic, unhygienic [!], incapable of stacking, and too easily counterfeited. (Chapman's major objection to the eagle was well founded, but the blame is on Barber, not Pratt; Pratt knew what a bald eagle looked like from working with models and photographs -- otherwise Roosevelt would not have approved his design! -- whereas Barber evidently did not.) Despite these objections, the design remained without further modification through 1929."

Today, one might have to ask a thousand dealers or collectors their opinion of the coin before hearing a negative view on the order of that provided by Chapman. Times change; aesthetic standards realign. Pop 96; 5 finer, 3 in 66+, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 7939) .
Estimated Value $7,000-UP.

1909. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with light golden toning. One would be hard pressed to locate a more pristine exemplary MS65 1909, even if one were known to either NGC or PCGS. The richly frosted, rotating golden surfaces, with their orange tinted perfection, make available a surge for the unhampered mint luster. No more than the luster comes a desirable strike. This piece is struck with scientific exactness throughout. Pop 182; 24 finer, 7 in 65+, 17 in 66 (PCGS # 7940) .

Pratt’s Indian design was a departure from its predecessors. Perhaps the most radical and innovative point on the Quarter Eagle was that it featured a naturalistic portrait of a Native American instead of an allegorical representation of Lady Liberty.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1911-D. Weak D. PCGS graded AU-53. Only 55,600 minted. Key date. A most agreeable AU 1911-D Indian $2.50, with traces of luster and an absence of heavy marks in the fields. The overall strike is perfectly executed but for the weak mintmark, including detailed definition in all main features such as the headdress feathers and fluffy trim, the eagle's neck feathers, wings and legs; importantly, the D mintmark is still visible, along with the diagnostic knife-like rim on the upper right portion of the obverse seen even inside the grading holder. A small dark spot on AR of DOLLARS (PCGS # 7954) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

1912. PCGS graded MS-62. An unusual design for a United States coin, the design is in recessed relief, as the mint called the striking method, with the flat field of the coin acting in lieu of the usual protective rims (PCGS # 7944) .
Estimated Value $400 - 450.

1913. NGC graded MS-65 PQ. CAC Approved. Nice shades of gold toning. Virtually pristine frosty golden fields spread sparkling light in every direction. In fairness to objectivity, the luster isn't the be-all and end-all of the grade, but for a Mint State 65 Indian Half Eagle, this one impresses us. Consider also strike: a sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this P-mint release for 1913. Pop 85; 10 finer, 4 in 65+, 6 in 66 (PCGS # 7945) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
