Lot 1576
1882, $5 National Bank Note. Brown Back. The Hopewell NB, Hopewell, NJ. Ch. #4254. PMG Choice Fine 15. Fr-471. KL-1119. A "Cigar Box Style" title layout is found on this $5 Brown Back from a scarce Mercer County bank. This is the only example of its type and denomination reported on this bank, which is represented by just 10 large size notes in the latest census. Delicate pen signatures add to its' appeal.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Lot 1577
1902, $5 National Bank Note. Plain Back. The First NB, San Fernando, CA. Ch. #9575. PCGS Very Fine 30. Fr-600. KL-1157. A lovely example with pen signatures and great margins, this is just the fifth large size example to surface from this rare bank. It is new to the census, just seven serial numbers away from a similar grade example that sold in 2004 from the Lowel Horwedel collection for $5,290. This piece should bring a similar realization today.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 1579
1902, $10 National Bank Note. Date Back. The NB of Orange, CA. Ch. #9878. PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ. Fr-619. KL-1222. This serial number 1 example is the first to appear from this bank and is new to the census. It is a gorgeous note, with great pen signatures and bright, fully original paper. A serial number 8 example sold 15 years ago in a CAA sale, and we sold a serial number 9 note in January, 2011. The latter brought $5,520, and although the grade was a bit higher than on this note, this serial number 1 note has much more desirability and appeal. A realization of twice that figure would not be at all unreasonable in today's market.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1580
1902, $10 National Bank Note. Plain Back. The First NB, Barnegat, NJ. Ch. #8497. PMG Very Fine 25. Fr-626. KL-1230. This is one of just five large size notes reported on this rare bank. It is evenly circulated, with no significant problems noticed whatsoever. It appears fully original through the holder, with traces of original embossing still visible. A slightly lower grade $10 Plain Back example from this bank brought more than $4,000 back in 2005, and we would expect a slightly better realization today.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 1581
1902, $10 National Bank Note. Plain Back. The First NB, Tustin, CA. Ch. #10134. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Fr-628. KL-1232. While small size notes from this bank appear from time to time, large size notes are exceedingly rare. There are only four such examples, all from the 1902 series, reported in the latest census, and auction appearances are few and far between. This note is moderately circulated and has a few trivial rust stains on the back, as mentioned by PCGS Currency, but the overall appeal is hardly affected. Certainly rare enough to bring far above our estimate, which may prove to be quite conservative.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
