Elizabeth, 1741-1761, Rouble 1742 MM? Elizabeth, 1741-1761, Rouble 1742 MM? 25.39 gm. Edge not regular spelling for neither Ivan, or Elizabeth’s Roubles – WW ??????????? WW ??????? WWW ????? Bit 107 (R1). Unlisted in other references. Light slate gray with pearly highlights. Very rare. Good very fine / Extremely fine After Elizabeth removed Ivan III from power, she withdrew his coinage and had them recoined in 1741, 1742 and 1743. The coin here though, is clearly not overstruck. The reverse eagle on this coin is unique to the Roubles of Elizabeth and is similar to the reverse eagle of Ivan - apparently the eagle used on the master hub of the Ivan III Rouble (Diakov 3). While Bitkin records this type no explanation was offered. Prior to now, there has been no examination, nor discussion of minting technology of the time. In this cataloger’s opinion, the eagle hub for the reverse die of Ivan’s Roubles were kept and reused at the Moscow mint for a limited period.
