Russian Lacquer Box from Palekh: Spectacular, Large Console Box of a Folklore Scene Boasting Stunning Detail and Extraordinary Gilt Gold Details. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting. After the collapse of Imperial Russia, icon painters/artists needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales. Offered is a spectacular example from Palekh of extraordinary beauty. remarkable detail and exquisite artistry. Lidded box is fully hand painted and resplendent in extensive gilt gold highlights that the lid appears to shimmer in the light. As with all the boxes in auction, box has the usual rich red lacquered interior. This piece has been signed by the artist, and on verso, the artist and studio also signed in gold. Fine scrolling surrounds the box not only framing the art of the lid but surrounding the middle sides of the box. 13 x 10 x 3". Excellent condition. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain lacquer boxes of this quality from Russia. Estimated Value $800 - UP

Russian Lacquer Box: One Vintage, Elaborately Hand Painted Box From Mstera, One from Fedoskino of Magic Carpet and Firebird. 1.) Vintage Russian lacquer box from Mstera, a small 17th Century Russian settlement known for their unique artistic approach to their crafts and icons very much evoking the 15 and 16th centuries. Wonderful example here of folklore boasting incredible hand painted details of such precision and an unusual perspective through the window that impresses. Further, the hand painted gilt scroll work surrounding the image is unrivaled in this auction. Box, pre-owned and slightly used the lower right corner shows a small chip at corner tip outside of the border work that has been touched up as well as light surface scratches on base; all hardly visible. But the image itself is pristine, again a masterwork of astonishing detail and worthy of any collection. 1½ x 5½ x 7"
2.) Beautiful hand painted box rich in detail from Fedoskino of a fairy tale magic carpet with a firebird in a gilded cage. Box is unusually shaped and perfect for jewelry or keepsakes. Measures 1½ x 5 x 7" and mint. Estimated Value $300 - UP

Striking Footed Russian Lacquer Box from Kholui Signed on Verso of a Fairy Tale King, His 3 Daughters and a Magical Firebird. Kholui lacquer boxes are Russian folk handicraft of a miniature painting, which is done with tempera paints on varnished articles made of papier-mâché ranging in sizes suitable for many uses. They are painted with local bright paints over the black background and are known for their delicate and smooth design, abundance of golden shading, and accurate silhouettes of flattened figures, which often cover the surface of the lids and sides of the articles completely. Palekh is the most renowned of four such famous villages who are known for creating traditional craft boxes.
An abundance of highly detailed ornate borders painted in gold and silver on top and sides makes this piece quite lovely and the enhanced gilt details painstakingly executed. Russian Lacquer Box: Glorious Winter Scene, Artfully Distressed to Appear as Antique. Excellent Russian lacquer box that while painted in the early 90s, intentionally distressed to appear quite old. The superior decoupage image of a winter scene with townspeople enjoying a playful procession of horse drawn sleds and families ice skating, the box is very heavily varnished and lacquered giving the image a heavily toned quality, and the lacquer having extensive crazing, a technique in adjusting certain ingredients in the lacquer. Together with rubs in finish, this piece very much appears to be far older than it actually is. Very different approach and quite appealing. 1¾ x 7 x 7". Estimated Value $250 - UP

Beautiful Hand Blown Studio Glass with Remarkable Precision-Wrapped Sterling Silver Thread. Most unusual cobalt blue, studio blown glass with (stamped) sterling silver mouth and exquisitely precise sterling silver concentric threads from top to base. The true beauty of this piece was not revealed until polishing, the silver bands beautifully contrasting the cobalt blue glass. Beautiful vase which can be monogrammed as plate is untouched. Save for the sterling silver hallmark and the number '34 etched on base, vase is otherwise unsigned. In near to mint condition 10½ x 4½ x 4½". Estimated Value $200 - UP

Beautifully Carved, Large Hardstone Brush Pot of Lotus and Carp. Large, elaborately carved hardstone brush pot. Beautiful details are evident including the lotus branches, pods, and carp that surround the pot. The open work in the carving impresses especially flanking the large carp on left side. We note only one very tiny chip at base, otherwise the delicate fins, petals, water splashes are all intact without any repairs. Again, an impressive size 7½ x 15 x 8" and weighing about 14 pounds. 4 Imari Style (Chinoiserie), Early 19th Century, Masons Ironstone Plates, England. Four early 19th Century and boldly decorated Masons Patent Ironstone plates. All four have softly scalloped shaped edges and hand painted with iron red, cobalt and ocher in a chinoiserie these plates are in excellent condition, showing little signs of wear. Two have the transfer printed mark 'Mason's Patent Ironstone China' with Dublin retailer Thomas Higginbotham* (c1800-1830) and while all four plates are virtually the same design, the Higgenbotham pieces are slightly deeper plates than the other pair. The other two have "Mason's Patent Ironstone China, Morley's" and slightly flatter. Overall these plates are in excellent condition given their 150 years boasting no chips, breaks or repairs and display beautifully. Very collectible pieces. Estimated Value $100 - UP

Two Lovely Complimenting Jingdezhen Porcelain Vases ProC Vases of Fine Quality. 20th century ProC (1949-Contemporary) from Jingdezhen, the most famous region of Southern China that has created porcelain as early at the Sixth Century but certainly by the 14th Century it was the largest center of production for Chinese porcelain in the world and unequaled in its artistry over the centuries.
Offered are two lovely, complimentary hand painted vases of an idyllic river scene that wraps completely around both vases and are exact compliments (mirror images) but not matching. Sumptuously painted top in an elaborate floral motif including peonies. No chips, cracks or repairs, one vase still retains its heavily toned with age "Made In The People's Republic of China" sticker on bottom measurements 14 x 5½ x 5½" with both underglaze red marks reading Jingdezhen. Terrific Cast Bronze Elephant, Very Appealing Sculpture, Artist Unknown. A wonderful and immensely appealing, contemporary cast bronze elephant. Bronze is unsigned but we note under two of the feet the numeral "1". Elephant is the perfect size for desk or table measuring 33" in height (from bottom of foot to top of trunk) x 31 x 13".

Bronze is also not as heavy as it would appear weighing only 22 pounds, so perfect for any tabletop or cabinet except for glass. Great piece. Estimated Value $600 - UP
