Coronet Head Half Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 309
1840 Proof Original Breen 1-A Electrotype Copy EF40. Double Struck. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The designs are blurry because this piece shows double impressions on both sides with a rotation of about 15 degrees CCW between the two. Clear evidence of the doubling is visible to the unaided eye, but it is especially obvious above the coronet tip and left of the bust tip. Perhaps this electrotype was copied from a genuine piece since there is a similarly double struck example of this date that has been known for many years (Coleman original strike listing #34). Mocab 40.1.3.
Estimated Value $100-UP.
Ex Joe Kane (Citizen Kane Coins).

A dozen or so microscopic specks of dark greenish crud are scattered over the obverse, but it takes a glass to see them. A well-executed electrotype copy. Mocab 45.1.2.
