Lot 966
1961-63 FLOWN Mercury ablative heat shield - manned mission. This section of heat shield was removed from a manned spacecraft after it's mission was completed. After recovery the spacecraft was processed by NASA and several sections of the heat shield were removed. The section was examined to determine its performance during the re-entry phase of the flight which heated the ablative material to temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The fiberglass composite clearly shows the stress of re-entry on its charred exterior surface. It is unclear which orbital manned flight this section came from. Measures approximately 1 cubic inch. COA (#10/16) included.
