Lot 1213
1896-O. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty white. Scarce date. The 1896-O is one of the most intractable Morgan Dollars to find with any degree of eye appeal, luster, and original surfaces. Collectors will search an eternity to locate a suitable one. Most of the remaining coins from the 4.9 million mintage (many were likely melted in 1918) show signs of circulation signs, and Mint State examples tend to be covered with heavy abrasions, the luster "lackluster," and the coins poorly struck. This piece has rich, coruscating mint frostiness with very few abrasions present. The striking is, as expected, somewhat shallow in the center of each side, this accounting for the MS63 grade designation, but all in all it is three steps better than most other Mint State examples being offered currently (PCGS # 7242) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1214
1896-O. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty and toned on both sides. To the inexperienced eye, the 1896-O Morgan Dollar would come across as a common, everyday O-Mint date in this long-produced and widely collected series. The New Orleans Mint struck just shy of 5 million dollars this year. Characteristic of the decade excepting only the 1898-O and 1899-O, the striking quality is, to put it charitably, well below average compared to, say, the 1880s decade O-mint dates. Since many coins made their way into circulation, this date is obtainable in worn condition. Even low grade Uncirculated examples can be purchased for a modest sum. In grades above the average BU level, on the other hand, the '96-O is one of the condition rarities in this series. This desirable example is a choice lustrous one with natural patina acquired over many year, with some of the luster still bright and hard-working as it glow beneath. Some weakness of strike is seen at the above the ear and at the eagle’s breast feathers. All other areas indicate the proper sharpness from metal flowing deep into the die recesses. Pop 277; 37 finer, 6 in 63+, 28 in 64, 1 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 7242) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1896-O. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty and white. Light bagmarks. Scarce in this grade. A lustrous Select Uncirculated that has pale silvery white color and a original luster. Struck with not quite the required mathematical precision by the dies, some central areas are incomplete by an unsuccessful strike left by the rebound of the dies. This is one characteristic of many O-Mint dates from the 1890s, however, and is taken into factored in by the grading service (PCGS # 7242) .

1899-O. PCGS graded MS-66 Deep Mirror Prooflike. The finest DMPL graded at PCGS. Fully white and choice. A brilliant and exceptionally lustrous Gem that has exquisite mirror fields and devices frosted like those of a Proof, giving strong contrast. Struck with systematic exactness throughout, a benefit of having been struck at New Orleans this year. The 1899-O, as well as 1898-O and 1900-O almost always display bold strikes. Collectors prefer these dates for their beauty as ideally situated for a U.S. Type Set. Pop 18; 3 finer; 1 in 66+ DMPL; 2 in 67 at PCGS (PCGS # 97261) .

1899-O. PCGS graded MS-67. A superb white gem. This is a pleasing, highly lustrous coin with a not a sing grade-limiting luster graze in its pristine fields. Given the proper amount of strike pressure for an 1899-O, the coin was fully brought up by the dies. Pop 114; 5 finer, 4 in 67+, 1 in 68 (PCGS # 7260) .

1900-O, O over CC. ICG graded MS-65. A hint of light gold tone. Once the Carson City mint closed its doors forever in 1893, it must have had several spare reverse dies on hand which were returned to the home mint at Philadelphia. There, the dies were overpunched with an "O" mintmark and sent on to New Orleans. Much of the underfigure "CC" remains. Both sides of this frosty Gem piece have brilliant silver luster inside the golden tint that hugs the periphery and produces a beautiful dappled effect on the reverse; outstanding original sheen to the silvery elements away from the rims. The surfaces are exceptional with fully lustrous devices, unusually strong on the design details for an issue that has sometimes uneven strike. The strike is indeed sharp throughout, and more than pleasing.

Lot 1225
1901. PCGS graded MS-63. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Mostly untoned. Scarce date in this grade. The tendency for Mint State survivors to be poorly struck, heavily abraded, and/or lackluster is particularly high on this issue. Offered here is a Choice example. A sharply struck coin, in fact, with fairly substantial and definitely satin white mint bloom, some faint traces of very light bag marks on the frosty face. Gem quality examples of this issue are virtually impossible to find, since the 1901 Philadelphia Mint business strike is among the "rarest of the rare." For all practical purposes, collectors should be satisfied with examples that grade MS60 to 62, for gem quality examples almost never appear on the market. This lovely Choice MS63 is decidedly above average no matter how one chooses to measure it. Pop 116; 36 finer, 3 in 63+, 30 in 64, 2 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 7272) .

1901-O. NGC graded MS-65 Deep Prooflike. A hint of gold tone near the rims. Pleasant satin luster ripples across Liberty's profile untoned the usual bagmarks. Unlike the usual frosty survivor with its sometimes diminished impression left by a weak blow of the (possibly worn) dies, this handsome prooflike coin is very sharp from top to bottom, center to outer rim dentils. 1901-S. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice frosty white coin. A bright, untoned coin radiating mint glow on gorgeous Gem quality silver surfaces. Nicely struck for the date, perhaps not entirely so over Liberty’s ear, but certainly a coin that gets a nod of approval where a complete design is difficult to achieve. Lot 1235
1903-O. PCGS graded MS-65. A particularly satin white Gem. Before 1962, the ’03-O was believed to be the rarest Morgan dollar in Uncirculated condition in the entire series! Then along came a previously unknown government hoard of Uncirculated 1903-O Morgans. When released the coins became only moderately scarce in mint-state grades but were now affordable by everyone instead of a select few wealthy collectors. Since most of the circulated 1903-O coins were melted over the years the 1903-O silver dollars in Circulated grades cost nearly as much as mint-state pieces (PCGS # 7286) .

Representative sharp strike for the P-mint date, somewhat bolder at the head and eagle area of the reverse than most others in the 1890 to 1904 period, which gives it the edge where objective quality is valued.
