Mikhail Krechetnikov (1729-1793) was born into an ancient noble Russian family. He participated in the Seven Year and the First Turkish wars and was promoted to General-in-Chief. As a talented administrator, he achieved high social status, rising from governor of the town of Tver (1773) to deputy Viceroy in the towns of Kaluga and Tula (1776) then Steward of Malorossia in the Ukraine.
