Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1675
1854 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck, light clash marks as made and light golden mint color. A beautifully preserved gold dollar. The wreath of corn, cotton, maple, and tobacco that designer James B. Longacre would in due course immortalize on the flying eagle cent also made the move from the three dollar gold piece to the new gold dollar in 1854-55. Once the Treasury Department agreed to the new design, coinage began on August 19, 1854. Within no time the Mint laid bare the new design's shortcoming: The relief of the obverse head was too high and Longacre had situated it against the highest points of the reverse. 783,943 coins minted.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

Lot 1676
1854 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-62. Lightly toned and frosty. A showy Type 2 specimen with a cocktail of underlying luster, frosty to satiny, that breathes scorching life into the attractively toned highlights, which are nicely struck with crisp details aplenty. (The 1854 Type 2 is generally better struck than the 1855 gold dollar.)

Once the Treasury Department agreed to the new Type 2 design, coinage began on August 19, 1854. Within no time the Mint laid bare the new design's shortcoming: The relief of the obverse motif was too high and Longacre had situated it opposite the highest points of the reverse. This created poor metal flow into the die cavities and even the capable Philadelphia Mint could not generate fully struck examples. Most pieces emerged from the Mint with weak devices and rapidly wore down to illegibility. The barely identifiable survivors that the Mint retrieved from circulation were melted as hastily as they had been designed, thus partly accounting for the relative scarcity of true Mint States of this important 3-year Type.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

Lot 1677
1854 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-62. Original golden mint luster. Both sides are saturated in pleasing copper-gold brilliance that accentuates the ample remaining luster. Mathematically exact standards seen in the sharp feathered headdress and most of the wreath as well. A lovely little coin. Upon receiving his post to Mint Director in 1853, Colonel James R. Snowden readied plans to modify the gold dollar that James B. Longacre had executed in 1849. To this end, Longacre increased the diameter of the denomination from 13 to 15 millimeters and reduced the thickness proportionately. At the same time, he seized upon the opportunity to redesign both the obverse and reverse devices. The chief engraver altered the gold dollar's resemblance to the double eagle when he utilized his replica of the marble Venus Accroupie from the three dollar gold piece. 783,943 coins minted.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

Lot 1678
1854 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61. A nice untoned example. A lustrous golden specimen with a grand display of warm orange gold radiance on both sides. Nicely struck, perhaps not fully so at Liberty's hair, but still well enough that its charm is enhanced immeasurably. The desirable Type 2 format with a plumed head of Liberty and "cereal wreath" reverse motif. Both are the handiwork of James B. Longacre, who also did the Indian cent.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,600.

Lot 1680
1854 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61. The otherwise bright-gold color yields to tints of golden-rose hues toward the fields. Clear-cut devices point to it having been giving a full strike by the dies including a very sharp wreath (often a problem on these scarce Type 2 pieces). The date is clear as well, while the rims are in choice condition. 783,943 coins minted.

1855 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Frosty, medium golden color. This is a lovely, healthy-glowing Type 2 example, whose full-color obverse and reverse being essentially only light toned, beams with frosty luster. The design left by the dies lacks a certain robustness only at the centers, but that isn't unusual for this mint's production. Its strong position in the gold market makes the Type 2 an important purchase for the collector. 758,269 coins minted.

1855 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61 PQ. Luxuriant pale-gold color is seen over each side with light accents of frost around the main devices. A tiny mark below the lowest feather. This date is easier said than done to find fully struck. The centers lack detail to the date and wreath ribbon from a somewhat uneven strike but the chief design elements such as the feathered headdress and hair above Liberty's brow are outstanding for 1855 Type 2. Scarce and very appealing.

1855-C $1 Gold Indian. SEGS graded MS-60. Retooled and expert rim repair. Our grade is sharpness of AU. There is still original luster throughout the main surface area, and enough detail to overlook the minor repair that has been done. Also, a much better made example than is usual for this date with relatively clear central detail in spite of a number of clashmarks inside the wreath.

Lot 1711
1855-C $1 Gold Indian. SEGS graded AU-58. Struck on a normal rough planchet. Our grade is XF-45. This is one of two die pairings for the issue, the other currently unlisted. The 1855-C is typically a poorly produced Charlotte gold dollar from a mintage of just 9,803 pieces. Survivors tend to be in Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated, but are often plagued with things that will drive a collector (and even a grading service) to distraction. Only a handful of Uncirculated examples are believed to be known. The present example lustrous coin, while typical in strike through the centers and portions of the obverse border, has a pleasing overall appearance. An opportunity for the specialized collector of Southern gold.

1855-C $1 Gold Indian. Sharpness of AU-50 cleaned and possibly retooled in the hair. A decent strike for this rare Charlotte mint issue. Lot 1714
1857-D $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-61. Nice golden toning. In 1857, the Dahlonega Mint delivered very few Gold Dollars. Survivors are scarce as hen's teen in all grades, as they probably number on the order of 120-130 coins (per Doug Winter, 2003). Most often seen in Very Fine or Extremely Fine grades, this date becomes more elusive in Mint condition by at least an order of magnitude, and can be said to be downright rare. One of several highlights of our extensive C and D gold in the sale, this toned MS61 example blends light green-gold and orange-gold colors as the surfaces throw up luster-filled light into the observer's eye. 3,533 coins minted. Pop 6; 6 finer in 62. (PCGS # 7546) .

1863 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Beautiful golden toning. Reflective golden fields and frosted motifs display rich orange colored iridescence. A clear, mirror field throughout helps to establish the Gem quality attributes of this specimen. This particular date in Proof is one of the great prizes to the gold dollar specialist. Indeed it is probably the key date among Proof gold dollars. While Mint records show a 50 Proofs of the date, we feel that fewer than that number may have been sold to. Indeed, perhaps 30 is more likely number released from the Mint. Apart from this, we know that just a dozen or perhaps a few more Proof examples are traced. Circulation strikes of the date because they are extremely rare, increase the popularity of the Proofs. Meanwhile, in referring to the Proofs, we suspect that the present specimen will see a lively round of bidding before it finally lands in a new owner's advanced collection. Indeed, this cameo gem is among only three Proof 65 Cameos seen by NGC. Pop 3; 3 in 66 Cameo; 1 in 67 Cameo.
