The illustrious Jacob J. Reichel (1760-1856) designed the Constantine Rouble, and the 1827 and 1845 Pattern Rouble and Poltina along with hundreds of other coins and medals. Medalist, designer and engraver at the St. Petersburg mint from 1802-1845, Reichel was both very accomplished and very successful. He served as Councilor of State, and was the recipient of the Order of St. Stanislaus First Class, the Order of St. Anna First Class and other high honors. In the 1820s, Reichel began collecting Russian and European coins and medals. He rose to be an eminent numismatist, while his collection garnered widespread fame thanks to the 9 volume catalog of his collection that Reichel published. When the new Hermitage opened in 1851, the Money Cabinet already boasted Reichel’s collection of Russian coins and medals (4,712 pieces), purchased by Tsar Nicholas I. The Hermitage purchased the balance of Reichel’s collection – 41,875 European coins and medals and Oriental and Ancient coins, from his heirs, 1856-1857.
