Lot 240
1885 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 68 Brown. Here is a wonder coin, the grade says it all, PF-68! How many of these exist, just a single coin in the brown category. There is one other graded this high by NGC as PF-68 RB, and of course none are higher. Further, the toning is magnificent on this coin, deep brown with alluring blue highlights throughout. At the base of the reverse, there is a hot magenta area below the wreath, while the balance is the same blue-brown over mirror fields. The strike is perfect, to be sure, with no signs of weakness. As to marks, we could only locate one tiny one above the E in ONE, which apparently kept this from an even higher grade. Free of all but the most minute signs of handling, and no spots to speak of. If you demand one of the very finest known examples of this date, then take a look at this stunning example.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

Fully struck, and perfectly preserved. This is the finest graded by NGC (along with the PF-68 Brown also in this sale) there are no others that grade this high, and there are no others graded higher by that service.
