Diodotos I, c. 256-239 BC. Gold Stater (8.28 g), Issued in the name of Antiochos II of Syria. Mint A (near Aï Khanoum). Diademed head right of Diodotos. Reverse: Zeus Bremetes advancing left, brandishing thunderbolt and aegis, eagle below. Newell ESM 713; Mitchiner ACW 63. Full, clean strike, with areas of luster. The portrait quite elegant, with the bold stylizations often seen in Hellenistic art from the East. Rare. An especially fine example, without the usual test cut. NGC photograded Uncirculated.

Besides being an adjunct to Seleucid gold coinage, most of which is extremely rare to begin with, this gold piece is the first in the line of the distinctive and colorful Greco-Baktrian coinages, which produced some of the most striking and interesting portraiture in Hellenistic numismatics.

While this remarkable and fascinating coin type proclaims King Antiochos on the reverse, the portrait, nevertheless, is of a Baktrian ruler, and possibly commemorates the Baktrian victory over the Parthians.

These commemorative, or "pedigree," coins were first issued by Agathokles and Antimachos I to show the dynastic lineage of their reigns. This tetradrachm, utilizing the Alexander the Great types, is particularly rare, and is missing in virtually every important Baktrian collection.

This wonderful gold coin, struck by Ptolemy III, portrays his wife, Berenike II, who effectively ruled the kingdom while Ptolemy was on the battlefield. This particular variety (with this reverse monogram) is missing in most all collections, both public and private; it was known to Svoronos from only one specimen, which was in the Consul Weber collection, auctioned in 1909.

Well-struck on a large flan, with none of the usual flan cracks found on this impressive issue. Extremely Fine.

Hyla Troxell, in her elucidating article in the ANS Museum Notes 28, concludes that the letters in the obverse fields of this and the gold commemorative issues, cannot be linked to a dating scheme, but are rather issue numbers.

The attributes of Helios in the radiate crown, of Poseidon with the trident and of Zeus's aegis contribute aesthetically to the youthful portait of Ptolemy IV's father. This is a remarkable offering of this difficult-to-find and impressive coin type.
