1820. Square base, no knob 2, large date. Overton-106, Rarity 1. PCGS graded VF-25. Nicely toned with the deeper area offset by light accents of silvery gray on the star-tops and design high points. Mintage declined somewhat in 1820 when only 751,122 half dollars were minted. Eight die varieties are recorded for the year. The 1820 half dollars are grouped into broad categories by the type of "2" punch used to punch-in the date. The very basic distinction is the curl base or square base of the numeral. The square base 2 punch is also subdivided into knobbed top or no knob on top.

School history texts are often silent on the United States' first true economic Depression caused by loose money, misallocated spending on roads, canals, and real estate speculation after the war with Great Britain ended in 1815. What is now called the Panic of 1819 in the more studious history books scarcely describes the intense pain felt by speculators, bankers and the general working man after the boom ended. That a large percentage of the population still farmed protected them from the harsher aspects that town people experienced. Perhaps this decline in Half Dollar production, which at the time was the hardest working silver denomination and a large export item, is the result of that almost-forgotten Hard Times episode (PCGS # 6123) .
Estimated Value $100 - 110.

1825. Overton-101, Rarity 1. NGC graded MS-64. Nice shades of gold toning. A luminous MS64 of optimum quality for the grade: The luster is smooth, satin-like, and free of marks or other abrasion. Further benefiting any prospective bidders is the way the strike is nearly full, being quite crisp in most places including all stars, the eagle’s wing, neck and leg feathers (even the claws are nicely defined) and a top-notch shield for what is traditionally the weakest area. All in all this handsome coin presents a splendid opportunity for the collector.Pop 52; 35 finer, 26 in 65, 6 in 66, 3 in 67.

Life in the United States, circa 1825: Stagecoach travel was rough going in those days. Journeys sometimes began as early as 3 A.M., but the sturdy dining fare at most taverns compensated for the tiresome journey. Stagecoach drivers in the U.S. didn't accept tips, but sometimes indulged in "shouldering," picking up unscheduled fares and pocketing the money. Passengers often invited the drivers to drink with them, and more often than not, the drivers accepted. Tipsy drivers, and those who couldn't resist a race, were two of the hazards travelers had to face. Often however, stage drivers were friendly and popular with the people along their routes. One driver in Massachusetts was said to have been delegated by the ladies on his route to pick out their bonnets. He was glad to oblige, seeing to it that he never purchased two alike. Other drivers carried messages, letters, packages and engaged in shopping for people along their routes, until the practice was so abused that it had to be ended. By 1825 turnpikes and canals brought cities closer together. Boston was within 2 days of New York City; New York City to Philadelphia took 11 hours; and the distance between Pittsburgh and Washington could be covered in 15 hours. (Almost the same as it takes today on a Friday getaway night in a snowstorm!).

1826. Overton-105, Rarity 3. ANACS graded AU-58. Lovely blue and gold toning with sleek luster underlying it all. A bold impression for the dies reveals exquisite hair curls, full sharp stars where on the first and ninth ones are ill-defined. Transferring attention to the reverse, the same boldness is seen. A most attractive 1826 Bust Half dollar. This year in history marked several events, two of which have a close relationship. The first is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The second, the coincidental deaths of John Adams (second President of the United States) and Thomas Jefferson (third President) who died only hours apart on the fiftieth anniversary of their handiwork, July 4, 1826. Neither was aware of the other man's passing.
