Well the same thing happens when a collector browses endless cold stale catalogs hoping to find high-grade coins that also happen to be attractive. 1918-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice frosty coin with a hint of light gold tone. Housed in an old green holder. Normal soft strike in the center obverse. Whether you live in a palace or reside in a rental apartment, the beauty of this coin's design transcends everything. Production increased in 1917-18 during the height of the first World War. But as many (most?) of these got into circulation, and as there were few collectors or hoarders back in those days, Mint State specimens are necessarily scarce (PCGS # 6576) .

Lot 2216
1919-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 CAC Verified. A nice white coin. A formidable coin that boasts a much better than average strike on Liberty and flashy white luster from top to bottom. Long known as one of the crucial dates in the series, the 1919-S is rarely seen with a 100% full strike; worse, it costs a king's ransom in gem condition. To locate a near gem MS64 that is well struck and exceedingly beautiful like the coin in this lot is something we could go on about. Further, this is the type of coin a buyer will want to use as a standard-bearer for others in his collection: Frosty luster in the fields and untoned with full satin around the periphery, on top of the devices. A couple of tiny marks are found with the aid of a glass on one of the long wing feathers in the eagle's plumage. But search where you will, not other distinguishing marks are present, nor are there things like tarnish or toning spots, the best of conditions. Pop 57; 49 finer; 38 in 65; 11 in 66. (PCGS # 6579) .

1935-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and mostly untoned. Lot 2234
1937 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. A lovely white coin. After only a few strikes by the Proof dies, the dies had to be removed from the press and relapped to strengthen the mirror finish (which tended to wear away quickly on this intricately designed coin). After numerous such repolishings, a portion of the design began to fade away, as seen in a few weak sun rays and OD of GOD, for instance. Definitely a Gem Proof with gleaming surfaces and spot-free originality. Only 5,728 struck (PCGS # 6637) .

1938-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and untoned. A famous photograph exists showing Denver Mint employees posing for the camera behind bags of 1938-D Half Dollars stacked on a wheeled dolly awaiting removal to the bank! Wouldn't it have been something to buy one of those bags at face value! Mintage of 491,600 pieces makes this is the key issue among the mid-depression walking Liberty halves. While a fair number were saved in roll quantities at the time, the fact of the matter is this has the third lowest mintage of any date in the series. A brilliant and wholly frosty Gem, its luster competes with the sharp design details for your attention (PCGS # 6605) .

1938-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Well struck with a hint of light gold tone. In fairness to objectivity, the luster isn't the be-all and end-all of the grade on a 1938-D half dollar, despite it being a defining feature of the grade. Consider strike: a sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this Gem BU piece (PCGS # 6605) .
