Carol I, as King (1881-1914). Gold Plaque. Peace Treaty of Bucharest, 1913. Uniface. 82 x 50 mm, 122.73 grams. By Carniol Fiul. Obverse and reverse of the military medal for Romania’s Victory in the Second Balkan War, radiant plaque inscribed PAX between, dates 29 JULIE / 11 AUGUST 1913 upper left, PRIMARIA/ BUCURESTI lower right. In original, plush purple Carniol Fiul case. Extremely Rare. PCGS graded Specimen 63. Estimated Value $40,000 - UP Both of these medals are believed to be from the private collection of King Carol II. Romania’s king from 1930-1940, Carol was an avid collector in many fields, and legendary among philatelists for his outstanding stamp collection. Romanian gold medals are all extremely rare with each event marked only by one to five pieces struck. Of the mintage, one medal was always presented to the king. Ferdinand would have inherited the medals of his uncle Carol I, and Carol II would have inherited the medals of his father and grand-uncle. View details
