1906-D. PCGS graded MS-62. Light golden color.

Historic note: By this year, the Wright brothers’ experimental period in manned flight ended. With their third powered airplane, they now routinely made flights of several minutes. In one, Wilbur Wright made a spectacular flight in which he circled the field 30 times in 39 minutes for a total distance of 24 1/2 miles.

In every sense, by 1906 the Wrights now had a practical airplane. They turned their attention to securing their patent and seeking a customer for their invention (PCGS # 8414) .
Estimated Value $475 - 500.

Lot 1697
1908-D. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and frosty with light natural toning. When Bela Lyon Pratt's new Indian head motif was launched upon the American waters in 1908, the public was surprised by the innovative design. Never before in American numismatics had a coin designer broken with tradition in such an overt way as did Pratt. For what Pratt did was to recess the design below the surface of the coin. His Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles were aesthetically challenging to make. In this instance, Pratt chose to honor a real American Indian, not some made-up Greek goddess wearing a fancy headdress. And because of this, his design helped to propel American coin design into the World Class league (PCGS # 8511) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.

Lot 1699
1909-D. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC Approved. A nice frosty coin. In late 1908 numismatists, accustomed to the Liberty Head design and unaware a change was being made, were surprised when they first saw one of the Indian pieces featuring a radical new concept. At the suggestion of Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, a Boston friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, also of Boston, redesigned the motif to picture an Indian head on the obverse and, on the reverse, the side view of a perched eagle. The format of the $2.50 and $5 coins, unique in American coinage, featured the lettering in recessed relief, rather than raised above the surface on the coin. The opposite of regular issues, the highest part of the new design was the field and the lowest was the design itself (PCGS # 8514) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.
The William H & Beuelaress K. Helem Collection.
