1878 Morgan Dollar. 8 tail feathers. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and white. A radiant Gem that has an outstanding strike and vivid silvery iridescence. Devices were struck with the primary energy to impart the design to all the key areas, including enough oomph and vigor by the dies to impart clear-cut centers. This is a well-known trait of 1878 8 tail feathers dollars (PCGS # 7072) .

1879 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 64. Older holder. Nice cameo coin. Extremely choice in terms of preservation, both sides are lightly frosted on the devices and for all intents and purposes display mirror-freshness in the surrounding fields. Lovely toning at the rims. A diminished is not even in the cards for such a coin of this year; in contrast, this piece was left very boldly detailed by the recoil of the sharp dies; a fortunate occurrence. Acquiring such a coin will rank as the highest and proudest memory of your bidding in this sale! 1,100 Proofs struck. Pop 70; 82 finer. (PCGS # 7314) .

Lot 1659
1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck and mostly untoned with a hint of light golden toning. Very choice for the grade. The 1879-CC is the scarcest of the 1878-85 Carson City Mint dates in the Morgan dollar series. There were 756,000 coins delivered, and the sales conducted by the General Services Administration in the early 1970s resulted in the dispersal of 4,123 of these. The GSA pieces, like most other extant '79-CC Dollars at the Mint State level, graded predominantly MS60 to 62. On the other hand, the outstanding coin that we are offering here is more than smooth enough to justify the MS64 grade. Thick, bright mint frost spreads over the surface on both sides and thins to modest reflectivity in the fields. The strike is nicely sharp for the type, and the otherwise heavy white highlights yield to a swath of shimmering iridescence within the eagle's feathers and Liberty's broad facial profile. There are no deep bagmarks. Pop 645; 78 in 65. (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 DPL. Brilliant white surfaces. Thoroughly frosted, as are many high quality Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint, this is a splendid MS64 example of a semi-key issue. The swirling silver-white iridescence is seen on both sides, while the striking detail is bold throughout. Minimally abraded, particularly is this the case on the smooth cheek, and an important survivor from an original mintage of just 756,000 coins. Pop 11; 1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 97087) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. White and frosty. Untoned with vibrant white devices and a satiny sheen on both sides, being just enough bagmarked to preclude a choicer designation. We do not see any discoloration or spotting, fortunately, and Liberty's cheek is nicer than average. As well, the strike is bold throughout (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. Capped die. PCGS graded MS-62. A nice white coin. A silvery specimen glowing with choice original mint bloom. A rounded impression was left by the stamp of the dies that struck this, but only at the exact center (hair above the ear, and some of the breast detail). Elsewhere the design elements are struck in no uncertain terms by the dies, leaving behind their sharp impression. It is good to be reminded every so often that the so-called "Capped Die" is actually a Medium Over Small Mintmark, the results of which went awry and ended up looking jumbled. Pop 264. 1880-CC, GSA Hoard. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty white gem certified in the GSA black holder. The lustrous coin has flashy luster and a clean cheek on Liberty. The strike is strong for the date, with just a touch of softness at the hair above the ear and on the eagle's breast. The reason for the popularity of the 1880-CC is that, unlike many CC-mint dates from the period, it did not emerge in large quantity from the Government Services Administration (GSA) hoard, dispersed in the 1970s. Demand for high quality examples is enormous, and the few frosty Gem pieces are especially desired, commanding a nice premium, since the frosty devices and flashy fields provide the greatest eye appeal.
