Army of the Potomac - Collection of Letters Regarding Reunions, etc. Group of approximately 30 letters written to Horace C. King, who was Secretary of the Society of the Army of the Potomac, regarding their attendance at reunions and other business. Written between 1880 and 1909, the group contains autograph letters signed, typed letters signed, and one War Dept. card signed. Includes Cabinet Members (many on official letterhead), and other prominent men, including: William M. Evarts (3), Elihu Root (2), George B. Cortelyou (3), John D. Long (1), Russel A. Alger (16 - many of these regard other business), Henry L. Stimson (1), and H.W. Slocum (1). A few other personal letters are included and a photo of Horace King. Expected toning; very good to fine.

Civil War Photographs: Petersburg and Fort Sumter. Two photographs: Confederate Breastworks Before Petersburg, sepia toned, 6½ x 8½ in., mounted on cardboard to an overall size of 8 x 10 in. Very good condition. Together with Fort Sumter, view from Charleston Harbor after the war, sepia toned, 8 x 14 in., c. 1865. Lightly stained. A 3½ in. vertical center tear does not affect the image. Matted to an overall size of 14 x 20 in. Good condition.

Jackson, Thomas "Stonewall" - Chromolithographic Portrait. Handsome bust portrait of Jackson in uniform, 16¾ x 13 in. The chromolithographic oil print process produced an affordable oil painting for those wanting a portrait of the nation's heroes and leaders at the end of the Civil War. Housed in a period oval gold gilt frame; overall size is 20 x 17 in.

Lee, Robert E. Carte-de-visite photograph as a three-star general, wearing his Confederate uniform. A waist-length portrait; no imprint on verso. Light foxing and fading. Affixed to the lower edge is a large signature and rank ("R E Lee / Genl") on pale blue paper, cut from a document. Double-matted and framed to 10 x 7½ in.

Mosby, John S. and Simon B. Buckner Signatures. John S. Mosby (1833-1916), nicknamed the "Gray Ghost," was a Confederate Army cavalry battalion commander. Signature on a 1½ x 2½ in. cut slip of paper, no place, no date. Matted with a 9½ x 7½ in. printed photo of Mosby and framed to an overall size of 18 x 14 in. Fine. Together with Simon B. Buckner (1823-1914), Confederate Major-General. In 1887 Buckner became the Governor of Kentucky. Signature ("S.B. Buckner, Maj-Genl") on a 1¼ x 2¼ in. cut blue slip of paper, no place, no date. Mounted with a 3½ x 2½ in. printed picture of Buckner, which includes a brief military career biography. Framed to an overall size of 10 x 9 in.

Officers of the 71st New York Infantry by Matthew Brady. Two albumen photos from Brady's "Incidents of the War," 10 x 14½ in., Washington Navy Yard, c. 1861. Good tone and contrast, slight loss to edges, some age wear. Matted and framed to an overall size of 31 x 23 in. Very good condition. The 71st was a popular regiment with numerous visits from politicians, dignitaries, and Lincoln himself on several occasions.

Personal Effects of Private Daniel H. Dickey. During the Civil War, Dickey (1830-1911) was a Private in Company "H" 10th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers. Personal items include: a carte de visite sepia-toned bust portrait of Dickey in uniform; a New Testament, hard covers, 4½ x 2½ in., New York, American Bible Society, 1857; and a straight edge razor with a 5¾ in. wood sheath handle and original 6 in. leather case, Wade & Butcher, Sheffield, c.1860s. Items are beautifully mounted and displayed in a 15 x 19 in. frame.

Rare Regular Army Recruiting Broadside. Rare, 29 x 22 in., red and blue print, Ringwalt & Brown, Steam-Power Prs., 111 & 113 South 4th St., 1863 recruiting poster. Archivally mounted on acid-free soft board. Torn left top corner, affecting the "R" in "Regular". Age wear and toning. Light water staining along the right vertical border. Horizontal and vertical folds. The poster was issued due to General orders, no. 190, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, June 25, 1863, for recruiting the regular army. Ordering that all men enlisting in the regular army for five years' service within 90 days from this date, shall receive premium, advance pay and bounty, of $402. Poster reads in part: "Regular Army! $402 Bounty! Men Wanted for the 11th U.S. Infantry!…. For further information apply at the rendezvous, No. 720 Chestnut St., Second Floor. Joshua S. Fletcher, Jr., Capt. 11th Infantry, Recruiting Officer." Overall in good condition.

Rosecrans, William S. and George H. Thomas. Membership certificate for The Society of The Army of the Cumberland signed "Geo. H. Thomas" as Society President, 1 page, 10½ x 14 in., no place, February 6, 1868. General Rosecrans ("W.S. Rosecrans") signed vertically across the body of the document. Both Rosecrans and Thomas had commanded the Army of the Cumberland. Vignettes of the Civil War and portraits of the Generals adorn the highly decorative document. Framed to an overall size of 13 x 16 in.

Sherman, William Tecumseh. Tintype of the Union general in uniform bearing two stars, 3 x 2½ in., with brass surround. Case is 3¼ x 3 in. and shows some wear. With a waist-length tintype of a soldier in uniform, nice and clean, in an intact thermoplastic case. Also, tintype of a man holding a baby, 3½ x 2 3/8 in.

Smith, Charles F (1807-1862) Career Army officer who served in the Mexican and Civil Wars; during the latter, he injured his leg jumping into a rowboat, leading to an infection that claimed his life. He was an instructor of Grant's at West Point. Smith's skills as a leader were such that Sherman commented,"Had C.F. Smith lived, Grant would have disappeared to history after Donelson." Scarce autograph letter signed ("C.F. Smith"), 1 page, 9¾" x 7¾", brown ink, West Point, N.Y., July 29, 1835. Holograph address leaf with manuscript postage and circular red West Point cancellation. To Rev. Philip Lindsley, Nashville, Tennessee. In part: "Your letter…to Lieut. Col. DeRussy, requesting an extension of the leave of absence heretofore granted to your son, has been received….I am directed to say that…Cadet Lindsley is authorized to remain absent until the 28th….Will you please to communicate this to your son…." Vertical and horizontal folds. Minor age toning and a few faint stains. Includes a glossy photo of an engraving of Smith, black & white, 10" x 8".

Three Union Generals and One Admiral. John Sedgewick (1813-1864) Union Major General wounded at Antietam and Glendale; fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. War-date letter signed (" John Sedgewick, Brig. Genl Comdg Division, 1 page, 9½" x 8", Harrisons' Landing, Va., July 7, 1862. A petition to the Governor recommending Col. Byron Laflin for command of a regiment. The letter is also signed by E.V. Sumner (1797-1863) as Brigadier General commanding the corp, and Alfred Sully (1820-1879) as Colonel of the 1st Minnesota. Winfield Scott (1786-1866) U. S. Army general, and unsuccessful Whig presidential candidate in 1852. Engraving inscribed "Very truly yours" and signed in the lower border, 8½" x 5½". Engraved by T. H. Welch / Phila. from a Daguerreutype by M. A. Root, 1844. Matted and framed to an overall size of 13" x 10". David D. Porter (1813-1891) Second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of Admiral. Signature and rank on a cut slip of paper, 2¼" x 3½", no place, no date. Strong bold signature. Handsomely matted with a picture of Porter and a descriptive brass plaque. Attractively framed to an overall size of 19" x 19½". (3 items).
