Lot 1302
1859 Pattern Half Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-249. Pollock-288. High Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 63. CAC. PQ. The obverse design by engraver Anthony Paquet depicts Liberty seated and facing left on a rock, her left hand supports a shield, her right touches the business end of a battle axe held in a fasces. Below is the date 1859 and she's surrounded by 13 stars at the periphery. For the reverse Paquet employs a large cereal wreath, open at the top and tied below with ribbons. Inside states 1/2 / DOLLAR. Lovely blue toning on both sides which adheres to the periphery, varying shades of russet, gold and bright silver to the centers. Curiously the strike is a trifle soft on Liberty's head (seen on others of the Judd-249 issue), and the reverse die shows patches of rust in the fields (rust in the die like this then creates raised lumps on coins struck as seen here). The rust implies this die sat around for a long time before being used to strike this half dollar pattern, and today it is believed these were struck in the early 1870s, but only a few were coined. Pop 2; 1 finer in 64 Cameo. (PCGS # 12000) Estimated Value $6,000 - UP

1867 Pattern Three Dollars. Copper, reeded edge. Judd-596. Pollock-660. High Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. The obverse and reverse are struck from the regular dies but in copper instead of the expected gold planchet. Additional patterns were struck in extremely limited numbers by these dies in nickel and silver. Deep brown toning on both sides, the obverse with varying flashes of brilliant reflectivity in the fields. Boldly struck as expected for a Proof, and carefully preserved with outstanding surfaces and strong visual appeal. Pop 1; 1 finer in 67 Brown. (PCGS # 60808) Estimated Value $12,500 - UP

Lot 1304
1868 Pattern Ten Cents. Nickel, plain edge. Judd-647. Pollock-720. Low Rarity 6. PCGS graded Proof 66+. CAC. PQ. The obverse is an exact copy of the Large Cent of 1853 to 1857 with the same head of Liberty facing left, and surrounded by 13 stars. The date below is 1868. For the reverse a similar but significantly changed wreath is present, open at the top and not continuous with a more delicate ribbon and bow below. The center within the wreath states TEN / CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the wreath. These patterns were likely issued to test the idea that since the 5C Shield design had been successfully launched in 1866, perhaps a slightly larger coin of a 10C denomination and also made with a nickel alloy would be accepted. Likely the similarity to the retired Large Cents caused this idea to be shelved for now. During this era the demand for subsidiary coinage was great, and most of the silver and especially the gold coins had disappeared from circulation. The mint tried many ideas to help alleviate the silver and gold coin shortages caused by the distruptions of the Civil War on our monetary system. Mostly untoned and well struck. Pop 1; 3 finer, 2 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 60865) Estimated Value $7,500 - UP

Lot 1305
1868 Pattern Ten Cents. Nickel, plain edge. Judd-647. Pollock-720. Low Rarity 6. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. PQ. Here is another example of this popular pattern issue which employs the Large Cent design of 1853-57 on a new nickel based planchet instead of copper. The date 1868 below of course, and no doubt a coin that would have caused confusion had it been issued for circulation. The reverse design shows an open wreath as opposed to the continuous wreath used on circulation Large cents up until 1857. This pattern wreath is tied with a delicate ribbon and states TEN / CENTS within the wreath, and legends surround. A nice example, solid for the grade and free of detracting specks or uneven toning, just right and pleasing in every way. Furthermore this is one of the finer examples known! Don't miss out from a chance to choose from two outstanding examples of this sought after pattern. Pop 2; 4 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 60865) Estimated Value $6,000 - UP

Lot 1306
1870 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Aluminum, reeded edge. Judd-886. Pollock-985. High Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC. PQ. Sure looks Proof 66 Cameo. Bright with a mere hint of toning starting to form over the brilliant white surfaces. The obverse is the William Barber Seated Liberty design, with her facing left, right hand holding up a shield with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. Her left hand holds an olive branch. Behind her stands a pole surmounted by the cap of freedom held high. The date is below and she is surrounded by 13 stars. For the reverse the regular dies of the quarter were used, it is interesting to note that this highly polished die greatly weakened some areas of the Motto ribbon above the eagle. A rare pattern issue which is seldom offered or seen, with only a few known to exist. Pop 2; 1 finer in 66. Estimated Value $7,000 - UP

Lot 1307
1870 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-888. Pollock-987. Rarity 5. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. Gorgeous rainbow toning on both sides which shows fiery russet around the rims with the centers both showing delicate teal and pastel hues. The strike is sharp, and the surfaces are essentially perfect. The obverse is the usual Standard Silver style, with Liberty wearing a cap with three stars, a ribbon in her hair states LIBERTY in raised letters. For the reverse an open cereal wreath is found, within which is 25 / CENTS / 1870 and above the wreath is STANDARD. Although this is a fairly plentiful issue for a pattern coin, this one is so superlative, it should bring a strong price for its amazing quality and eye appeal. Pop 1; tied with an NGC PF-67 for the finest graded examples at both services. (PCGS # 61132) Estimated Value $5,000 - UP

Lot 1308
1870 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Silver, plain edge. Judd-889. Pollock-988. Low Rarity 7. PCGS graded Proof 66. CAC. A rare and desirable pattern in any grade, particularly so at this lofty premium gem grade. The obverse depicts the head of Liberty facing right, sporting a cap which folds up at the back, the cap is adorned with three stars above her forehead. A ribbon binds her hair and a portion of ribbon over her shoulder is inscribed LIBERTY. Above her head is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA following the curvature of the edge, below is IN GOD WE TRUST on a raised ribbon in the field. For the reverse a large open agricultural wreath is found within which states 25 / CENTS / 1870 and above the word STANDARD. Elegant russet and gold toning spans the obverse, the reverse with a more complex combination of deeper russet and gold on the left, rich blues on the right. An outstanding example of the ever popular Standard Silver series coinage that is wonderfully free of handling marks. Lovely golden and blue toning. Pop 1; 2 finer in 67. (PCGS # 61133) Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500
