Four Japanese Netsukes All Boasting Wonderful Craftsmanship. Netsuke are miniature carvings/sculptures that were invented in 17th-century Japan to serve a practical function. Since kimonos had no pockets, bags or boxes hung from the sash and were secured at the top by a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. Over time, however, netsukes evolved into objects of great artistic merit and craftsmanship. Offered are four fine examples of carved boxwood. The elder Japanese man intrigues with its exceptional detail carved from a single piece of wood, the staff he is carrying part of that single piece of wood. It stands 4" tall. But the gourd and Laughing Buddha exhibit fine craftsmanship and the near square piece is carved with lightly carved undulations representing waves, tiny metal particles representing sand with three tiny shells actually crafted by shell. All four are in wondeful condition. Estimate Value $300 - UP

Striking and Handsome Carved Jade Figures, Pendants and Tablets Possibly of Some Age. A collection of jade carvings that came to us from a consignor of ancient chinese coinage. The collection ranged from significant pieces to 19th century reproductions. We think these pieces are similar or even 20th century. What is undeniable is how appealing the carvings are and how remarkably distressed their appearance. The collection consists of 9 rectangular tablets, all with intricate image of mystical animals, foo dogs, the ocean, sky and stars, even one with a dancing figure. All are around 1¼ x 4 and are quite appealing. The six figural carvings are likewise quite interesting ranging from a ram's head, two foo dogs atop pedestal, but when laid flat appears to be a beetle. There is also a fine rabbit and three other pieces, the thick ovoid piece carved on both sides with temple scenes. The figures vary slightly in size but are all around 2 x 1½". Estimate Value $250 - UP
