Qing Dynasty - Tai Ping Rebellion. Sheng Bao, circa 1854, AE 50 Cash (24.1 g, 46.5 mm). Obverse legend "Tai Ping Tian Guo" (Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace), reverse legend "Sheng Bao" (holy currency). The largest denomination for the bronze series issued by Tai Ping Rebellion. A well made coin with thick rims, sharp characters and heavy weight. Even chocolate toning on both sides, cleaned and traces of corrosion. Very rare. Extremely Fine.

The Tai Ping Rebellion was one of the most influential and disastrous insurrections in the late Qing Dynasty. Hong Xiuquan, the leader of this rebellion, started as a religious leader (Christianity) in a group known as God Worshipping Society. Once noticed the weakness of the Qing government, he then claimed himself the brother of Jesus Christ and rose in revolt. The rebellion was very successful with over 30 million people and 600 cities involved. The regime they finally built was officially called "The Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace", and Hong proclaimed himself the "Heavenly King". However, the ruling class soon developed great interest in hedonism, even though the regime never enjoyed a minute of peace. Collapsed from inside, the regime fell after the death of Hong. Denmark. Gold 2 Ducats, 1673. Fr-198; Hede-3. 6.90 grams. Christian V, 1670-1699. Crowned monogram of Christian. Reverse: Elephant advancing left, with tower on back and goaded by Moor; date below. Small planchet defect at 6 o'clock. Some marks, but this is an extraordinarly well cared for piece, well made with great detail and much residual luster. Few survived so fine! Very rare. NGC graded MS-62. Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
There are many "elephant" coin collectors, so this coin is both highly elusive and avidly sought after. It is believed that this issue was produced as a special award to those few members of Denmark's highest chivalric order, the Order of the Elephant. The watchtower on the elephant's back stood for purity. A marvelous piece.

Napoleon saw himself in some respects as a new Alexander the Great, conqueror of wide territories, with their disparate peoples melded under the guiding and civilizing genius of French culture. As Alexander was Greek, so too was Greek art put to the service of Napoleon's imperial vision. In fine art, we see at this time the fruition of the emerging movement of Neo-Classicism, a restrained style of almost severe purity of design, harking back to the sculptural styles of 5th and early 4th century B.C. Athens -- but actually emulating the Roman reinterpretation and revival of the style which occurred under Augustus, first Emperor of Rome. On Napoleon's coins, as seen in this splendid example, this artistic idiom was realized in a number of fine, austere and dignified portraits. As Napoleon's military conquests spread over Europe, so too did his coinage.

Henry was a descendant, from the wrong side of the bedsheets, of the inimitable John of Gaunt. Although a Lancastrian, when Henry gained the throne he was from the onset determined to bring order to England after 85 years of civil war. He thus married Elizabeth of York, and so combined in the Tudor line the factions of both Lancaster and York. Further discord as to succession was now ended.

Henry's experiences with English nobility during the War of the Roses led him to mistrust them. So he worked diligently to strengthen the monarchy at their expense. Henry likewise displayed acumen in foreign affairs. The most far reaching, incidently, was to secure Papal dispensation for his son, Henry (the future Henry VIII), to marry Catherine of Aragon (whose divorce would provide a home for Protestantism, founding the new Church of England). In commerce, Henry encouraged trade, and subsidized shipbuilding, along with entering into lucrative trade agreements. Both crown and country profited under his stewardship. He moved England away from the Middle Ages, where feudal obligation was primary, to a more modern country of law and trade.

The East India Company was a major tool in Britain's path to mercantilism. It provided a means for the eventual incorporation of the whole of India into the British Empire. It was established in 1600 to challenge the Dutch-Portuguese monopoly of the spice trade in Asia. Initially, the British had hoped to sell linen broadcloth to the vastly populated subcontinent -- something that had proved immensely popular and profitable for decades in their European markets. They were severely disappointed but discovered that native items could be sold at home for handsome returns. Winning concessions over time from local rulers, the Company established trading posts aimed at obtaining silk, cotton, indigo and tea in Madras, Bombay, Calcutta, and elsewhere along both coasts. Parliament later rescinded the Company's monopoly, but by the time of this coin's minting some 15% of Britain's imports came from India, and the Company's presence required an ever larger British military obligation to safeguard operations and pesonnel. By 1773 a Regulating Act instrumented by Lord North granted to the Crown control over the affairs of the Company, and placed the whole of India under the rule of a Governor-General. The East India Company was dissolved in 1858, when the administration of India was turned over to the Crown. This wonderful coin valued at 5 Guineas, marked with the Company's initials, was struck from gold obtained in India through trading conducted by the Company at the height of its power.

A very choice piece, sharply struck and exhibiting premium "green gold" toning. The rarity of this historic piece, in this grade, almost defies description. Probably the finest known. NGC graded MS-64. Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
Almost all of the treasure captured by Anson was silver, only a tiny percentage being gold bullion. Hence the gold coins bearing LIMA are rare in all grades. Anson's voyage strained relations with China, while being extremely costly and contributing little to the war effort. But, in terms of prestige and perception, the view of British naval superiority was greatly enhanced. The idea that the British were untouchable was greatly magnified, and as naval prowess increased the Empire expanded.
