Lot 1845
$20 Gold St. Gaudens. 1909. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ+. A gorgeous blend of light orange gold color with olive and rose highlights! Totally pristine surfaces with crisp luster that rolls over fields untouched by bagmarks or hairlines. Sharply struck with defined broad borders. There are no copper spots on this choice gem specimen. The only mark to note is a light scuff on the reverse sun, but hardly a mark that should sway one froming considering this piece Gem. It is an almost unheard of event to see an example of this date in such a condition.
When David Akers catalogued the Price specimen of this date in 1998, he noted that a large hoard of 1909 "Saints" had recently been entering the marketplace. Hundreds of examples increased the overall population of the 1909 $20 and since most of the coins graded in the lower Uncirculated range, this date can now be found up to MS63 quite easily. It is important to note that Akers pointed out that he was not aware of any coins grading Gem from that hoard.
This 1909 Saint Gaudens double eagle is fresh onto the market from an old time collection and one look will no doubt leave the observer stunned. In over 50 years of business we have never ecountered an '09 Saint of this stature. Perfect coloration and hardly a mark. PCGS population of 112 in MS64, 13 in MS65 and only 4 in MS66 as finest.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 25,000.

$20 Gold St. Gaudens. 1911-D. NGC graded MS-67. The 1911-D is one of the most common issues from the Saint Gauden Series, especially for the pre-1920's dates. With that said, forget it if you think '11-D's of this condition appear with any frequency. Take the typically seen microgranular surfaces and satiny texture and imagine it at the highest level of beauty and what you get is an example such as this. Superbly struck and Condition Census, as NGC has graded 16 in this grade with not a single finer.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
