Lot 1190
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Small 3. PCGS graded AU-58. One of the finest graded of this date, PCGS notes just 13 graded this high, with 3 graded higher. The obverse is well struck by the dies, with most of the stars full, and substantial hair detail on Liberty. Silvery gray on the obverse, with most of the luster intact. On the reverse, we note rich gold and green toning over the luster with abundant eye appeal. The reverse die was probably lapped when this one was struck as the eagle's tail is a bit weak, and some of the devices seem a bit shallow. One very thin scratch is noted on Liberty's chest, but we so no other signs of handling worthy of note. Certainly high in the condition census for the variety, and worthy of a strong bid from a specialist who demands the finest available for this variety.
Estimated Value $8,000-UP.

Lot 1191
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Small 3. . B-4. PCGS graded AU-53. Sharply struck and with decent luster in the fields near the devices. Light steel gray in color and evenly toned on both sides. The surfaces show gentle circulation and minor fine lines seen on virtually all early silver coins. Early dollars such as this are very difficult to locate in high AU grades, and even securing an EF can sometimes be challenging. We anticipate a strong price when this one crosses the block.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.
No provenance known, but purchased privately.

Lot 1192
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Small 3. PCGS graded AU-50. Good luster and well struck on all but a few of the left obverse stars. This one has a bisecting obverse die crack through the R of LIBERTY to between the 18 of the date. In the color department, this one is quite choice, with blue near the edges and abundant gold in the fields. Clean for the grade, with no surface disturbances, the only mark worth describing is a rim nick just right of the eagle's tail. There is a trivial planchet streak up into the field through the first two stars on the obverse. One of several really choice bust dollars offered in the Benson collection, we hope all collectors can obtain at least one of these memorable toned coins for their collections, and wish we had even more to sell. This is Bowers die state III, and probably in the top dozen of the variety, although this is speculative until further research is done to bring the Condition Census more up to date.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
From the Benson collection and purchased privately from B. Max Mehl on May 4, 1946 for $32.50.

Lot 1193
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Small 3. SEGS graded AU-50 "V" Counterstamped obverse. The obverse of this coin is counterstamped with 4 large "V" shaped punches, deeply into the coin, slightly deforming the reverse. Some luster remains and the coin does not appear to have circulated much after the counterstamps were done. Few counterstamped bust dollars are known, and this is a coin that the future owner can enjoy and research. Nice surfaces and slightly mottled gray and gold toning on both sides, and while it is aggressively graded by SEGS, it is a curiosity that will find interest.
Estimated Value $300 - 600.
From the John Haugh collection.

Lot 1194
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Large 3. PCGS graded VF-35. Light steel gray in color and with average surfaces. We note adjustment marks on the left side of the obverse, some of which continue through Liberty's hair. We note one short scratch through the base of the N of UNITED. The reverse die was rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise, as usual for this variety. Sharply struck on the right stars and most of the devices.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,400.
