Franklin, William (1730-1813) American soldier, attorney, colonial administrator and the acknowledged illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was a steadfast Loyalist throughout the American Revolutionary War, while his father was a Patriot, causing an irreconcilable break between them. Document signed ("Wm. Franklin") as Colonial Governor of New Jersey, one page, 8 x 12 in., Burlington, New Jersey, December 11, 1770. A certificate of marriage between Aron Mershon and Mary Pearson, with decorative calligraphy accomplished in black ink. Age toned. Age worn around the edges. Vertical and horizontal folds. Slight page separation left center border does not affect the bold signature.

Hughes, Charles E. Autograph letter signed, on personal "Peckett's-on-Sugar Hill" letterhead, 2 pages, 8½ x 5½ in., Franconia, New Hampshire, September 3, 1937. To Henry L. Stoddard (1861-1947), editor of The New York Evening Mail, regarding the scheduling of a possible appointment with Mr. Stoddard. With original holograph transmittal envelope. Overall toning. Center folds. Accompanied by a typed letter signed as Chief Justice, on "Supreme Court of the United States" letterhead, 1 page, 10½ x 8 in/, Washington, D.C., May 16, 1932. To Henry L. Stoddard of New York City, regarding receipt of Hughes personal check "…relating to my check for $500 of May 11, 1932, to be used in the matter of William R.Wilcox. I am satisfied with any disposition that you make of this amount in his interest. I am writing this merely to state our understanding that you are under no personal obligation to me…" Overall toning with vertical and horizontal center folds. Both items in very good condition.
