Wells, H. G. Handwritten Note, Signed: Author of The Time Machine, Island of Dr. Moureau, and War of the Worlds. (1866-1946). Herbert George Wells was a prolific English writer of fiction, history, politics, rules of war, social commentary and textbooks, but he was known the world over for his science-fiction novels, including The Time Machine, First Men in the Moon, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and The War of the Worlds, which earned him the moniker "The Father of Science Fiction." Autograph letter signed ("H.G. Wells"), on blind embossed personal note card(s) Spade House, Sandgate, September 15, 1906. A thank you letter to a Roland Bass regarding something referenced and the question of whether they had ever met previously. In excellent condition with separate insert affixed to first half of note and lightly tacked to card stock at top and bottom. Entire piece measures 10 x 4". Estimate Value $500 - UP

Collection also includes an excellent handwritten note of thanks by Henry Fonda on his stationery, signed "Hank" with a vintage re-strike 8 x 10" photo, two pieces signed by Bob Hope: A souvenir journal of Bob Hope's career from the National Theater and Academy inscribed and signed on cover created by Hirschfeld from 1981 and a typewritten letter signed dated 1968. Guest Book From a 1935/36 Chartered Sailboat to Catalina, John Wayne and Jack Oakie Both Having Signed With Long Entries. Unusual and curious item of a guest book with autographs and entries throughout. There are certainly two names of note John Wayne and Jack Oakie but there may be considerably more notables. John Wayne signe John Wayne "Duke" and wrote "Well Popeye, you finally let me get aboard this scow and you're going to have a hell of a time keeping me off from now on" Plus a long entry May 14th, 1935 on the opposite page about "leaving with John Wayne, Bud Huntley and Bob Morrison". The other celebrity entry is by Jack Oakie and reads: "Admiral Jack (Shirley Temple) Oakie Picture Actor……Hair Sandy Eyes Blue. If you want me to come again call CR 8573, if a woman answers hang up!" There are all kinds of other entries and, to be frank, there appears to have been some serious horsing around on this pleasure boat! Autographs and entries in excellent condition. Guest book cover shows its age but inside is quite fine. Estimate Value $500 - UP

Jurassic Park III : Autographed Key Art by Director Joe Johnston, Sam Neil, Téa Leoni, William Macy and more. JURRASSIC PARK III : cast and director signed key art piece from 2001. Fantastic image of the Jurassic Park logo shadowed by a large Pteranodon which proved quite a nemesis in the film along with the Spinosauraus, the largest animatronic ever made for a film weighing 12 tons. Signed are director Joe Johnston, Sam Neil, William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Trevor Morgan and Alessandro Nivola, all obtained at junket press events. Rare Autograph of Boris Karloff, Presentation Matted with Photograph as The Monster in FRANKENSTEIN. Boris Karloff (born William Henry Pratt 1887-1969) For Golden Age Hollywood collectors, most especially those of Universal Horror, there is no autograph more desirable than Boris Karloff. Portraying The Monster in three FRANKENSTEIN films, as well as Imhotep in THE MUMMY, the mute butler in the phenomenal OLD DARK HOUSE and co-starred with Bela Lugosi in THE BLACK CAT, THE INVISIBLE RAY and THE RAVEN. Karloff also distinguished himself in non-horror films such as John Ford's THE LOST PATROL. The 1940s brought him great success on stage and film in ARSENIC & OLD LACE. Later Karloff in the mid 1960s Karloff was the narrater in the animated television hit THE GRINCH THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS. Offered is a 2½ x 3½" cut signature on lightly textured paper executed in black fountain pen ink. Paper has light toning and two tiny stains at edge of mat. Carole Lombard, Clark Gable and Fred Astaire : Very Rare Signed Studio Contracts. Three of the greatest stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood; Carole Lombard (1908 - 1942) her husband Clark Gable (1901-1960) and Fred Astaire (1899 - 1987). In this lot are three, rare individual studio contracts.
1.) Carole Lombard, the highest paid star in the late 1930's known for her screwball comedy roles such as TWENTIETH CENTURY, NOTHING SACRED and her best, MY MAN GODFREY. Offered is her contract with RKO Radio Pictures, Inc. to star in Alfred Hitchcock's MR. & MRS. SMITH (10% of the gross up to $150,000 and 5% after $150,000 with an advance of $25,000 for 12 weeks work and co-star billing with Robert Montgomery. Remarkably this is only a two page contract executed by the VP of RKO, J.J. Nolan and is boldly signed by Carole Lombard in black fountain pen on onion skin paper. 2.) Clark Gable (1901-1960) husband to Carol Lombard at the time of her untimely death, and he, The King of Hollywood, the star of so many great classic film, it is impossible to list them, but certainly GONE WITH THE WIND and IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Signed in August, 1944, a rider drawn up by his talent agency for a waiver approved by The Screen Actors Guild, signed by agent Phil Berg and signed boldly by Clark Gable in black fountain pen ink. 3.) Two signed contracts by Fred Astaire (1899-1987); a 20 PAGE 3 Picture deal between himself and RKO. FLYING DOWN TO RIO, THE GAY DIVORCEE AND ROBERTA dated May 27, 1933 and a second contract by Oct. 23, 1944 authorizing drawing of a salary for ROBERTA. The 18 page three picture RKO contract has Fred signing boldly and clearly with no oxidation whatsoever of the ink. The second signature somewhat slight but absolutely legible. George Gershwin Signed Contract Regarding "Rhapsody in Blue" plus Ira Gershwin ALS and Signed Photograph. George Gershwin (1898-1937) one of America's premiere composers whose mark on popular and classical genres in the 20th Century cannot be overstated. Rhapsody in Blue, orchestral arrangements including Porgy & Bess, and his collaboration with his brother Ira creating some of the most beloved works of musical theater and films in American history including. Offered is an original last page of a contract signed by George Gershwin and HARMS, Inc., one of the top tin pan alley publishers in New York at the time. Contract stipulates that elements of Rhapsody in Blue can be used for the film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD, with a handwritten addendum in another hand that the name Gershwin or Rhapsody in Blue under no circumstance could be used in connection with the advertising. Contract measures 10 x 8½" with George Gershwin's signature extremely bold and legible. Contract was signed one year prior to his death from a brain tumor. From his brother Ira Gershwin (1896-1983), a most beloved lyricist (I Got Rhythm, Someone To Watch Over Me) offered is a wonderful 5 x 7" photo signed in black fountain pen ink as well as a 8 x 6" note handwritten on The Gotham Hotel stationery (now the Peninsula New York) dated Dec. 6, 1937 "Dear Watty, This being my birthday and I being a perverse fellow, I am celebrating this festive day by sending you a check, With my best, Ira". Presentation matted 18 x 12" without frame. All the pieces in this collection are in excellent condition. Estimate Value $500 - UP

Rare Groucho Marx Signed 1936 Contract for Dodge Motor Cars in Photo Presentation. Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx, part of the legendary Marx Brothers and on his own a comedian, radio, film and television personality whose popularity remains almost as strong as it was two generations past. Offered is a letter of agreement 11 x 8½" to the agency representing the publicity of "The Dodge Division of Chrysler Motors" in 1936 with a pull quote created for Marx expressing his satisfaction in driving a Dodge, effective for one year and agreeing not to lend his name to any other motor brand for the contracted period. Groucho has signed boldly at end of contract. Contract and a reproduction photo of all four Marx Brothers has been professionally framed and matted to 25 x 13" and ready to display. Stan Laurel (Laurel & Hardy); Heartfelt, Melancholy Letter to his Wife Hoping To Reconcile. Arthur Stanley Jefferson (1890-1965) Stan Laurel; Beloved British music hall comedian who became half of the legendary duo, Laurel and Hardy, who starred or co-starred in over 170 short and feature films. Awarded accolades throughout his career, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award Academy Award in 1961 and is considered "the comedian's comedian." Stan Laurel had four wives and five marriages. He married Ruth Rogers in 1935 and divorced her in late 1937 claiming he wasn't over his previous wife who had no desire to resume their marriage. Laurel married again, divorced and re-married Ruth, which ultimately failed again. Here Laurel has handwritten a wistful, melancholy letter asking to see her after a location shoot and to please be open to working on making their marriage work. Written on plain stationery, in black fountain pen 10¾ x 8" with tape repairs to fold on verso, with some writing and notations. Also included is an endorsed check by Ruth from Stan Laurel's account, possibly alimony, dated July, 1938. Estimate Value $500 - UP
