Lot 1182
1981-S Double Struck and broadstruck Kennedy Half Dollar in Proof! Proof 65. An extraordinary error very few of which are known. We must remember that proof error coins are seldom found, the quality controls at the various mints on Proof coins are especially high, and we can only guess how this one escaped the San Francisco Mint in 1981 without detection. Needless to say, it would not have fit into the standard proof set box of issue, as the coin has expanded quite a bit from the normal size because of the double striking outside the collar. The devices are well frosted and the coin is quite spectacular to view. There is no edge reeding, and with the extreme pressures used to strike Proof coins, the planchet split through the top of Kennedy's head. Certain to be one of the highlights of an advanced error collection.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
