Lot 1585
$3 Gold. 1861. MS-67. Amazing and absolutley stunning Finest Known specimen. Silky luster is everywhere and makes it hard for the viewer to concentrate on the other immaculate qualities of this museum qualtiy piece. The coloration is uniformly beautiful and a mix between straw and honey yellow. Near the obverse top periphery there is a light ring of olive iridescence, followed by a ring of rose hues and then a ring of olive again. In such pristine condition, the lines from the polishing of the planchet prior to striking are still visible to a degree that one could think this coin was struck last week (…which it wasn't). Liberty herself is covered in complete and orignal mint frost. The plumes of the headdress are sharp and unscathed. Quality of the reverse is on par with the obverse and the luster, strike and original frost are outrageous. A tiny die crack is seen starting at the left lower foot of R, extending through the 61 of the date and ending where the two bows meet. On the headband, the IB and ER of LIBERTY are spaced apart further than any of the other letters, with the biggest space (0.8 mm) between ER. Identified by a tiny curved lintmark close to the hair and back of neck, left of R in AMERICA. This is the Finest graded by either NGC or PCGS. Population of 1/0! Truly a magnificent offering!.
Estimated Value $65,000 - 70,000.
