1802/0 C-1 R6 Overdate 2 over 0, Rev of 1800 AG3. Sharpness VG8 or slightly better where the details were properly struck up, but the surfaces are covered with fine to moderate granularity. No verdigris but there is a significant rim dent over LI in LIBERTY and the opposing rim over UNI in UNITED. The date is complete and easily readable and most of the legends remain visible, although they are not strong. Slightly glossy medium brown on the devices blending to darker chocolate brown and olive in protected areas. The radial die crack through the E in UNITED to the wreath is obvious but the single leaf feature at the top of the wreath is faint at best. An easily attributable example of the very rare 1802 with the reverse of 1800 variety. A single variety "Redbook" type. Weight 90.1 grains. Value $7,000 - UP

1803 C-4 R4. PCGS graded AU-50. Triple Struck Obverse. Glossy chocolate brown with lots of frosty light brown toning in protected areas and an area of darker olive brown toning in the field before the chin. There are some light contact marks at the top of the wreath plus a few more scattered over both sides, none notable but more than you expect at this level of sharpness. The obverse was struck three times with a small offset between impressions of no more than a half millimeter. Nonetheless evidence of the three strikes is clearly visible on the date and all devices. The reverse, however, shows no trace of more than a single strike, and the fields on that side are slightly prooflike. The reverse is rotated 10 degrees CW. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF35 for the tiny contact marks. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 55, 1 in 55+, 1 in 58. 1804 C-2 R6 AG3. Sharpness VG8 but there is carefully engraved graffiti in the obverse fields, possibly American Indian symbols plus the initials "PP." The reverse is unmarked and the surfaces are smooth. Glossy light steel brown and olive; probably lightly cleaned and retoned. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early, with a die crack through the tops of ERTY, strongest on the right half. The extension of the crack up from the top of that E has not formed. Softly struck on the left side of the reverse thanks to non-parallel die faces, as always seen on this very rare variety. The date and legends are complete and clear except for the usual weakness on ED ST. The reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees clockwise. Too bad about the engraving; this would have been one of the finest examples known. Value $4,000 - UP

1804 C-2 R6 AG3. Slightly sharper but covered with very fine roughness. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a half dozen fine scratches on the obverse. Slightly glossy mix of medium brown, chocolate, and olive brown. Probably lightly cleaned and retoned. The left half of both sides is weakly struck, as always on the variety but especially pronounced in the late die state. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with a strong cud break at ERTY. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees clockwise. The date is weak but readable and most of the legends are complete. The Missouri Cabinet example of the variety with the cud break was a cleaned and damaged net G4+ that brought $12,075 (our sale 1/24/2014:61), and the corroded net G6 example in our Davy Collection Sale (9/4/2011:210) brought $32,200. Lot 483
1808/7 C-1 R6+ Overdate 8 over 7 AG3. A few points sharper but there is an attempted puncture at the E in LIBERTY and some rim bumps on both sides, the strongest of these before the end of the nose. Cleaned and retoned dark olive brown and steel. Softly struck from the M in AMERICA to the denominator (as always on this variety thanks to a misaligned reverse die). The date is complete and the overdate is clear, and most of the legends are clear as well. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the usual die crack through ITED STATES. An acceptable example of this classic rarity in the half cent series. Only a single example is known that grades better than VG8, and it sold for $184,000 as lot #89 in our 1/24/2014 sale of the Missouri Cabinet. Most of this variety are in very low grade and have significant defects. A rare opportunity for the serious collector looking to complete a variety collection of US half cents. Value $15,000 - UP

Lot 484
1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 VF30. At least ten points sharper but covered with uniform extremely faint roughness under slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. The only mark is a small, shallow planchet flake at the dentils just right of the date (as struck). Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, with an uncracked obverse. The 8 over 7 overdate feature is obvious. This is the Manley plate coin for the early die state (1.0) (PCGS # 35212) Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 485
1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 AG3. Sharpness G6 but the date and fraction have been scraped away while the remainder of the coin is smooth and nice, just worn. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with a faint die crack through RTY. There is a relatively strong double profile from the forelock down to the bottom of the neck with additional doubling on LIB. May be an actual double strike rather than a simple die "bounce" or "machine doubling." Value $100 - UP

Lot 486
1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 G5+. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate with a wisp of darker olive brown toning through the wreath over HALF. The reverse is a bit stronger than the obverse. The planchet is smooth and the only notable mark is a shallow scrape across the lower end of the hair ribbon extending lightly into the hair. The date and overdate feature are clearly visible (although the bottom of the date is starting to wear into the rim) and the legends are complete. MDS, Manley state 3.0, with a strong cud break connecting TY in LIBERTY to the rim. Value $150 - UP

1808 C-3. PCGS graded VF-35. CAC. Very choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Flowline luster covers the protected areas and this piece is beautiful, virtually flawless in every respect. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 15 finer. (PCGS # 35206) Value $200 - UP

Lot 488
1808 C-3 R1 VG7. Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Smooth and attractive, just worn. The only marks are a couple fine scratches in the blank portion of the tab double strike. Later die state. This piece was struck two times. One strike was slightly off center to K-7, perhaps 5%, to K-7. The other strike was way off center with two planchets in the coining chamber. The tab impression on the obverse that obliterates the 18 in the date was made against a blank planchet. The tab on the reverse was against the reverse die and you can see the top of the L and left top of the adjacent F from HALF plus several of the leaves in this part of the tab. It appears the tab strike came first, then the planchet was struck a second time very slightly off center in the direction of the tab (the imprecise positioning caused by the tab pushing against the edge of the coining chamber). A wonderful multiple mint error. Value $400 - UP
