Lot 1380
Spanish America War Belt Buckle and Medal. United States, c. 1898. The buckle a rectangular plaque, in gilt or gold-toned brass. Stamped design, a large wreath with vignette of the Maine within, and enameled crossed American and Cuban flags above; inscribed, "U.S.S. Maine, Destroyed in Havana Harbor, Feb. 15, 1898." Width: 2-7/8". Along with this, a medal, approximately 6" long, comprised of a yellow ribbon with hanging American flag (13 stripes and 13 stars) down the center. At the top, in bronze, is the American eagle atop shield. At the bottom of the ribbon, a cavalry saber, infantry rifle, and a naval anchor all crossed, representing the various branches of the military; serial number stamped on reverse. Below, the pendant medal is the Spanish American War Veterans Cross, with the four arms reading "Porto Rico," "Cuba," "Philippines,"and "USA." The dates on the cross read 1898-99 with the words "Spanish War Veterans." The reverse side of the cross has the word "United," with "North," "South," "East," and "West" in the arms. The buckle well and proudly used, a little bent and wavey, with slight chipping to enamel, but overall with a fair amount of gilding remaining. Same for cross, with a few frayed spots to the ribbon.

1898. A landscape portrait of Spanish American War volunteer troops on review, by G.A. Bash, Canton, Ohio, c. 1898, 7" x 22½". Visible on a drum in the forefront is "Citizen's Band. 3rd Reg't. I.N.G. Peru, Ind." Another drum states, "First Infantry Band. I.N.G. Vincennes, Ind.," and another, "Second Regiment Band, Chicago." Framed in a period wooden frame to an overall size of 13½" x 25¾". Very Fine.
