Great Minds of Space Sciences, Technology and Medicine: Outstanding Archive of Signatures, Letters & Photos, 90+ Pieces. Full three ring binder of some of the most brilliant minds of the 19th and 20th centuries, several having signed multiple pieces.

Space sciences: James Van Allen, instrumental in establishing the field of magnetospheric research in space. Van Allen radiation belts were named after him, and led the scientific community in putting scientific research instruments on satellites. Ten (10) signed pieces including a portrait photo, covers, cover of TIME magazine and pages of illustrated pages of his discoveries. 2.) Clyde W. Tombaugh signing his name with the inscription "Discovered 9th planet Pluto on 18 Feb, 1930 on seven pieces including two planetary articles and one handwritten letter. Also included are twenty (20) 11 x 8½" reproductions of the NY Times where the discovery was first headlined, each signed by Tombaugh 3.) Carl Sagan signed cover of NEWSWEEK. 4.) Herman Oberth, one of the Founding Fathers of Rocketry has signed a portrait photo and nine pieces on the V-2 rocket. 5.) George Van Biesbroeck, brilliant observational astronomer who contributed greatly to the study of double stars, asteroids and comets Biesbroeck has written a one page letter of biographical notes of his career to an unnamed publication dated Oct. 8, 1956 that includeds an 8 x 10" portrait.
6.) Handsome 8 x 5" signed and inscribed (to Ralph) B&W photo by Jacques Cousteau, immensely popular French undersea explorer, conservationist, filmmaker/photographer, author and researcher who studied the seas and all forms of life in water.

Men of Medicine: 7.) Jonas Salk acclaimed virologist who developed one of the first polio vaccines using killed virus. Five (5) signed pieces including the stunning illustrated cover of TIME magazine in 1954. 8.) Albert B. Sabin, medical researcher developed an oral vaccine based on mutant strains of the polio virus which proved a game changer in the early 60s in nearly eradicating the disease 9.) Charles Mayo, Chairman of Mayo Clinic established by his father signed cover. 10.) Charles H. Best (with outline of his hand) co-discoverer of insulin. 11.) Christian Barnard, cardiac surgeon who performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant operation signed cover. 12.) Denton Cooley first cardiac surgeon to install an artificial heart, signed 3 x 5" card dated 1981. 13.) Michael DeBakey, landmark cardiovascular surgeon whose surgical innovations included coronary bypass operations, carotid endarterectomy, artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices all now commonplace, life saving procedures. DeBakey has signed two 5 x 7" B&W photos. 14.) Benjamin Spock, the most globally recognized pediatricians whose book, "Baby & Child Care" published in 1946 is one of the most best selling volumes in history. Spock was also a very public critic of the Vietnam War. Spock has signed two magazine covers inscribing and signing his objection to the war and has signed two 5 x 7 photos.

Also included in this collection are several pieces signed by 15.) William Shockley (transistors), one 3 x 5" card signed by Walter Brittain (transistors with Shockley at Bell Labs), 16.) Edward Teller, six signed pieces of this atomic scientist including his cover of TIME, 17.) Robert Millikan, Nobel Prize winner, a typed letter signed along with two vintage copies of speeches (one on onion paper) where he actually references Einstein's definition of god, 18.) Linus Pauling signed cover. 19.) Simon Lake hand written and signed check dated 1937 (invented first open seas submarine in 1897, 20.) Albert Hull acclaimed research physicist handwritten lecture notes from 1943. 21.) John Rumely, typed letter signed dated 1914 for requesting an investor for funds to pay for his kerosene patent of his Rumely Oil Pull Tractors which proved very successful. 22.) Vlaimir Zorkyn, several signed pieces, inventor of the television, 23.) The oldest and most rare piece in the collection is a handwritten letter dated 1864 by Cyrus W. Field, American financier who was the first to succeed in laying the transatlantic cable between America and Europe boasting a large, bold signature. 24.) Buckminster Fuller 20+ signed pieces including covers and images from text books of many of his designs and a seated portrait. Estimated Value $800 - UP

Sciences & Scholars; Ground Breaking 19th Century Notables in Their Fields. Some Very Rare Signed Pieces. Fine, diverse collection of letters, notes, and autographs by a variety of acclaimed scientists and scholars. 1.) Richard A. Proctor (1837-1888) celebrated English astronomer who produced one of the earliest maps of Mars (the crater Proctor is named in his honor) as well as numerous publications. Very rare inscription and signature on a 2 x 3¾ calling card executed in his exquisite handwriting "From earth to Sun, from solar systems to Sun systems, from Sun systems to (larger?) systems of Sun systems, - 'Lo these are but a portion of God! Ways they utter back a whisper of his Glory!" Richard A Proctor, London, June 22, 1874. Near to mint condition and rare. 2.) John William Lubbock, 3rd Baronet FRS (1803-1865) was an English banker, barrister, mathematician, astronomer as well as significant researcher in evolution and archeology. He coined the terms Paleolithic and Neolithic to differentiate between the old and new stone ages. Scarce note signed on his Mansion House Street, London stationery dated July 1, 1857 "Sir J. Lubbock regrets that it will not be in his power to be present on the 8th. Note is 6 x 4½" with two adhesive stains that in no way impact the handwriting and signature. 3.) Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks (1826-1897) was an English antiquary and museum administrator and respected historian of the British Museum and considered the most important collector in the history of the British Museum, as well as one of the greatest collectors of his age. ALS on blind embossed British Museum stationery 2pp. folded 7 x 4¾" dated July 1, 1892 writing to a friendly associate regarding viewing an auction of a private collection that most he finds too expensive. But one lot, a casket, he would like to have but does not want to compete. Excellent condition. 4.) William Martin (1772-1851) Founded the Martinean Society in London in opposition to the Royal Society, a bit of an eccentric especially in regards to speaking against Newtonian Theory of Gravity. 3 page handwritten letter about an arrangement for a lecture on perpetual motion claiming "there could be no true philosophy without a discovery of perpetual motion." 9¼ x 7½" signed Wm. Martin and is in very good condition with the usual soiling and handling of a letter this age. 5.) George Engelman (1809-1884), botanist, physician and meteorologist known primarily for his monographs, especially one on the cactus. Commercially speaking, for his important discovery of the immunity of the North American grape to plant lice. Long 3 page 10¾ x 9½" letter speaking about the geology of in the White and Arkansas Rivers dated July 24, 1841. Toned, fragile a few small tears but very legible with a clean signature. 6.) An ALS by scholar dated Oct. 16, 1842 by Joseph Bosworth (1788-1876) author of first Anglo-Saxon Dictionary 2pp 7½ x 4". 7.) An autograph by James Frederick Ferrier (1808-1864) acclaimed intellect on philosophy and educator at University of Edinburgh adding St. Andrews, Scotland. Estimated Value $600 - UP

Excellent Collection of French Men of Science Two Nobel Prize Winners, One Field Medal Winner and the First Two French Astronauts. Jean FONTANILLE is a French guitar player and composer from Bordeaux. Charismatic, talented and savvy, he was the co-founder of the French online Music School BandNote and continues to play with a great number of pop singers. He has released three albums. He created compositions in honor of several men of science: 1.) Pierre-Gilles de Genes, Nobel Prize Winner for Physics in 1991 became something of a pen pal sending six (6) handwritten letter with quite hand drawn sketches which are all unexpectedly accomplished. 2.) René Thom, Fields Medal winner in 1959 for his Catstrophe Theory, a typed letter signed on Institut des Hautes Études Scientfiques dated 1995, 3.) Hubert Reeves, acclaimed Astrophysicist, two typed letters signed on his personal letterhead. 4.) Two typed letters signed by the first two French astronauts in space. First, Général Jean-Loup Chretien on Center National D'études Spatiales signing a typed thank you note on his letter head. Second, Patrick Baudry on Aerospatiale letter head, typed letter signed as Director of Programmes Espace.

All are in excellent condition, the de Genes pieces especially fine. Estimated Value $300 - UP
