1938-D. PCGS graded MS-66. A nice coin which could probably benefit from a judicious bath. Its luster is slightly subdued by silvery toning that also shows some faint water spotting. Hand's a touch flat, and the eagle's wings show some minor scuffs.

1939. NGC graded Proof 68. Miss Liberty's leg shows the typical die-finishing marks, so ever present on nearly all of these Proofs, yet the color is that oldtime "cellophane silver," with a blush of blue, which distinguishes the finest, pristine pieces. Thirteen graded this high, none better.

Lot 1344
1948. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. Here we begin with the Finest Franklin Half Dollar set we have ever seen. These were mostly put away years ago and have the old dark green PCGS holder inserts. Many coins will soon be upgraded no doubt. Around World War II the mints looked for ways to modernize coinage, and most of the coinage series were changed. The Half Dollar was one of the last to be changed, and what better way than by honoring Benjamin Franklin with the combination of the Liberty Bell on the reverse. Although popular, the relief was fairly low, and striking quality varied from year to year. On some dates, up to half the coins were struck showing the full bell lines on the Liberty bell, other years are virtually unknown with full bell lines (like the 1953-S). Years of submissions to PCGS now gives us a clearer picture of how rare some of these dates are with full bell lines. Be sure to select carefully from this complete collection, as many of the coins are in the top dozen known.
The 1948 is fully struck with complete bell lines on the Liberty bell. Frosty luster abounds and there are no surface problems of any kind, including bag marks or other signs of contact. Outstanding quality.

1948-D. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. A superb gem coin that is graced with light obverse toning and a bit more color on the reverse. The strike is full and complete, and the coin has the appearance of having come from a mint set, as these often have similar toning. Carefully preserved from the time of issue. Abundant luster and perfectly struck, only a few faint tick marks on either side.

A coin that could easily be upgraded.

1949-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. A frosty gem that remains untoned. A few scattered marks on the lower obverse, not enough to diminish the grade. Long collected as the key date to the series, it has been upstaged by a few others that are even more difficult to find with Full Bell Lines. Approximately one out of ten of this date have Full Bell Lines according to the recent PCGS Population Report keeping this as one of the key dates to the series. Only 101 have been so graded, with 25 grading higher.

1952-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. Golden and russet peripheral toning on both sides greatly enhances this rarity. The PCGS Population Report shows a mere 56 so graded in Gem, with 4 graded higher. That makes this one of the very best available. As is typical of San Francisco, the coining pressure was seldom enough to bring up all the lines on Liberty's bell, which is what makes this coin so special. An opportunity for the specialist.

Lot 1361
1953-S. PCGS graded MS-66. Here is the key coin to the Franklin Half Dollar series. First of all, this coin is set apart from the other dates by its low mintage which obviously was not saved in great numbers. After years of collecting data on coins, the PCGS Population Report shows that only 13 coins have been graded with full bell lines of this date, making this by far the most difficult date to locate. When the numismatist examines this coin, you will see virtually complete bell lines, and we would not be surprised to see this coin in a "FBL" holder before long. As it is, this is one of just 43 coins graded this high by PCGS, with none graded higher. What truly separates this piece from the many other mint state 1953-S's are the untouched fields and devices. Sometimes toning obscures tiny tick marks, but without toning to hide behind, the surfaces are laid out there for all to examine. Be sure to view this untoned beauty before the sale, and prepare to bid accordingly.

1954-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. One of 117 to be so graded, with a meager 5 graded above. Frosty and white, with a hint of toning starting to form. Like other "S" Mints, this coin is very difficult to locate boldly impressed, most are mushy, flat and unappealing. To locate one with a full strike and blazing luster is a real treat for the advanced numismatist. An opportunity!

1961. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. Here is another key date to the Franklin Half Dollar series. The PCGS Population Report reveals a scant 30 have been so graded, with none graded higher, making this tied for the Finest Known of this "common" date in very uncommon condition. The color is pristine, a lovely arc of gold toning at the bottom of the obverse and a blush of toning around the reverse periphery dances over lustrous fields. Boldly impressed on the devices, unlike most others of this date, with full bell lines on the reverse, in common with about one in seven of the issue.
