1776 Continental Currency. "CURENCY". Pewter. . Newman 1-C Rarity-3 . PCGS graded AU-55. Glossy medium steel gray with frosty light silvery gray toning in protected areas. Very nice for the grade, free of any marks, planchet flaws, or "tin pest" corrosion. Sharply struck showing all the fine die details. The die crack down the left side of the obverse is strong and the reverse is rotated 135 degrees CCW relative to a head-to-foot orientation. A choice example in all respects. PCGS population 5 in this grade with 54 finer.

There are small contact marks scattered over both sides, including a pair of dull pinpricks above the 6 in the date. Nicely centered and free of any rim bruises. The reverse is rotated 140 degrees CCW relative to a head-to-foot orientation. A nicely balanced, lightly circulated example of this famous early federal pattern. Housed in an old green-label PCGS holder.

(1828) Holt's American Plantations Farthing or 1/24 Real Restrike. . Breen-78. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty light silvery gray with a few small patches of darker toning where there is shallow corrosion, mostly at the front legs of the horse. The corrosion is fully arrested, void of any active "tin pest" or powery residue. Sharply struck everywhere except at the very top of the reverse. These pieces were struck from the original 1688 dies that were used to produce the first royally authorized coinage for the British colonies in America. PCGS population 5 at this grade with 5 others slightly finer in MS63.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,500.

1783 Chalmers Annapolis Shilling. Long worm. . Breen-1012. PCGS graded VF-30. Glossy light gray with lighter silvery gray highpoints. No contact marks or other distractions. A tiny planchet clip over the S in CHALMERS is the best identifying mark. Struck very slightly off center to the right causing strike weakness on that side, but everything remains legible. The long worm feature is clear. (The long worm version is seen less often than its short worm counterpart.) These were struck in Annapolis, Maryland, by silversmith John Chalmers in an attempt to help alleviate the chronic shortage of acceptable small change.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 6,000.

1783 Nova Constellatio. Pointed rays, large U.S. . Crosby 1-A Rarity-1. VF-30. Choice glossy medium brown and chocolate. Smooth, defect-free surfaces except for a few tiny, light marks around the A right of the date and a faint planchet lamination below NOV of NOVA. The date and legends are complete, although some letters of the legend are tight to the rim thanks to being struck slightly off center to K-3. Intermediate die state. Weight 141.8 grains.
Estimated Value $350 - 700.

1785 Nova Constellatio. Pointed rays. . Crosby 2-A Rarity-5. EF-40. Choice glossy medium brown and chocolate. Flawless, mark-free surfaces and great eye appeal. Two tiny swipes of slightly lighter toning at LI in LIBERTAS can help identify this choice early copper. The center of the obverse is bulged outward causing weakness in the center of the reverse, but this one is struck better than most of the variety. The remainder of the strike is strong. Weight 122.2 grains. A very nice example of this rare variety, certainly one of the finest ever offered at auction.
Estimated Value $400 - 800.

1785 Nova Constellatio. Pointed rays. . Crosby 3-B Rarity-1. MS-63. Choice lustrous medium steel brown with faded mint red showing in many of the protected areas. Absolutely flawless surfaces. The details are sharply struck on both sides. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the lower left while the reverse is perfectly centered. It is difficult to imagine a more perfect example. I won’t waste time with glowing adjectives, just treat yourself to an in-person inspection of this piece. Finest known of the variety, and we know of no better Nova Constellatio regardless of the date or variety. Plated in the "Redbook" through 2005 to illustrate the 1785 with pointed rays type. Weight 114.4 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 4,000.

The date is strong and the legends are clear, although a couple letters are flowing into the rim. A very nice example of this rare variety, the rarest of the short series if you don't include the extremely rare 1786. In the lower end of the condition census. Weight 109.8 grains.

Smooth and very attractive. The only marks are a tiny rim nick over the right top of the C in CONSTELLATIO and a pair of microscopic ones over the left side of the E in LIBERTAS. These marks are not at all distracting and are mentioned to help identify this example for future researchers. Nicely struck and perfectly centered on a flawless planchet. MDS. 1787 Immunis Columbia. . Breen-1137. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Uniform frosty dark chocolate brown. Struck very slightly off center to the bottom leaving the lower third of the date off the planchet, but two-thirds of a date is more than usually seen and examples with a complete date are extremely rare. That's because the planchets used for these (possible) prototype federal designs were slightly undersize for the dies. There are a few small, shallow contact marks on the lower half of the obverse and a dull rim nick at the top of the first U in UNUM. Sharply struck with crisp details on both sides. A premium example of this rare post-colonial (confederation) issue. NGC population 1 with only 4 finer.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 15,000.
