Pre-Columbian Ancient Copper Collection of 60 Pieces, Superbly Presented: Tumis, Bells, Tweezers, Crotals, Needles and More ca. 700-1200 A.D. Beautiful collection of ancient copper mostly from the Moche-Chimu period 700-1200 A.D. and numbering 60 pieces. The standouts are 10 tumis. Tumis were employed for a diverse set of purposes such as kitchen knives, agricultural tools, warrior or hunting secondary weapons, sacrificial knives, barber implements, pendants, or medical tools. In addition, the tumi form, in certain metals, was used as a type of coin. The large tumis are highly prized by collectors with the three largest measuring 10 x 5", the second 7 x 4" and the third largest 6 x 5".
Also included are crotals and bells, needles, 10 different style tweezers (hair was heavily tweezed) a hook, utilitarian and ceremonial/ritual pieces and several kinds of ornaments both decorative and worn. All have appealing age patina. All pieces have been expertly sewn to the fabric back in teal green thread with no adhesive. Collection worthy of any level of collector and quite an attractive display piece. 24 x 33". Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,800

Moche, Polychrome Stirrup Spout Vessel with Painted Face. Striking Moche vessel with stirrup spout, intriguing in that is clearly a man sitting with tribal face painting. Just at 8½ x 5 x 4½ vessel has been professionally restored from having multiple breaks. The seams, save for the stirrup are tight and not obtrusive. Remains a very striking and impressive piece. Two (2) Pre-Colombian Mayan, Polychrome Terracotta Bowls: Impressive Orange & Black Painted, Ceremonial Tripod Bowl & Small Pot. Two (2) Pre-Columbian Mayan Lowlands, terracotta bowls of polychrome slip colors of orange, red and black
1) Painted and incised ceremonial tripod bowl, Mayan Lowlands with painted panels and zoomorphic symbols highlighted by incisions throughout surrounding the sides and continuing underneath the bowl between each of the three legs. The bowl was unearthed in fragments but now virtually intact after professional restoration decades ago. Restorer opted not to fill in cracks as commonly done on ancient Greek and Roman pottery. Interior is painted in red and black polychrome slip. Bowl displays beautifully even with the visible fissures and is a wonderful example from this period, 500-800 A.D. 3¼ x 9 x 9"
2.) Nicely paired with a terrific small pot with rounded bottom decorated in casual geometric designs in red and black colors. Pot is near fine with only very minor chips to neck. 4 x 3½ x 3½. Estimated Value $500 - 800

Outstanding Pre-Columbian Ceramic Polychrome Mask Culture Undetermined, Thermoluminescence Dating Analysis by UCLA. Quite striking Pre-Columbian Mask from an an indeterminate culture. Male face with scarification represented by four raised dotted areas with red tinted areas around them and across cheeks, an open slit mouth showing only three teeth with thin goatee and mustache above and below, slit eyes and raised eyebrows. Mask was dated by thermoluminescence dating analysis by UCLA on Feb. 7, 1989 Ref # 2788 at 1100 years in age. Acquired through Von Strauss Fine Art, the Estate of Ralph Steffens. Copies of documentation included. Superb condition, a stunning piece. 7½ x 6" no chips cracks or repairs. Stand included. Estimated Value $500 - 800

Two (2) Pre-Columbian Nazca Polychrome Terracotta Bowls, Peru. Striking pair of pre-Columbian Nazca polychrome bowls. Larger bowl measures 3 x 6½ x 6½" and is decorated in simple designs of red and black paint with no cracks or repairs with only some tiny flake chips inside bowl. The smaller bowl, actually closer to a wide mouth cup, is in remarkable condition, with particularly fine decorations in red, rust, black and white colors. 2¾ x 4 x 4". Estimated Value $500 - 900

Two (2) Pre-Columbian Chimu Blackware Pottery from Peru: Two Fine Examples, One with Human Face. Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1250 to 1450 A.D
1.) Intriguing single handled small pitcher with the face of a male and details of braided hair up to the neck of vessel. 6½ x 4 x 4". Small chipping to one area of mouth, otherwise quite fine.
2.) Small vessel with single handle and decorated with a small monkey aside the neck. Bulbous gourd like body with a fine patina. 4¼ x 5½ x 2¼". Vessel must have been set onto a cradle as it's fine, curved shape does not allow to stand upright. A knockout piece. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Two (2) Pre-Columbian Chimu Blackware Pottery: Two Remarkably Distinct Patterns: One Evoking The Plates on an Armadillo, One as Two Gourds. Two terrific examples of Chimu Blackware Pottery from Peru.
1.) Vessel with a distinct pattern very much evoking armadillo plates or scales, a mammal indigenous to the Americas. Very minor chipping at mouth otherwise very fine and beautiful piece. 6 x 5 x 3"
2.) Unusual vessel of two gourds tied together (note details of twine surrounding the "waist" of both) with neck protruding from the center. Bird-like figures decorate the gourds and flanking the neck. 5½ x 4½ x 3" and in choice condition. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Two (2) Pre-Columbian Chimu Blackware Pottery: Owl Bodied Single Handled Jug, and Rounded Vessel with Raised Alligator Shape. Two Bird/Animal examples of Chimu Blackware Pottery from Peru.
1) Excellent juglet decorated with the body of an alligator as if sunning himself just below the neck. Obviously a piece that used a cradle due to bottom of juglet in a very rounded shape. Choice condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stand included.
2.) Vessel, a single-handled pitcher with owl body and face. Striking piece with some chipping at top of neck and around base. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Two (2) Pre-Colombian Mayan, Polychrome Terracotta Bowls: Copador and Chalice Shaped Bowl. Two fine Pre-Columbian polychrome terracotta bowls.
1.) Copador bowl decorated with polychrome slip colors of black and red with two of four panels decorated with geometric designs. In choice condition, bowl measures 3 x 5 x 5" with rounded bottom likely from Honduras. No cracks, chips or repairs
2.) Pedestal bowl in polychrome slip colors in black and reds in concentric geometric designs throughout with three nodules on opposing sides for decoration. One contusion to mouth of bowl has been repaired decades past as well as a small repair along bottom of pedestal 4 x 5½ x 5½". Nevertheless a very handsome piece that displays nicely. 2.) Peruvian Cuchimilco figure in black. Fine example with very discrete restoration to head separated from body (Northridge Earthquake). 4"
3.) Two Ecuadorian Pieces on wood stands, one two figures sitting, 2½ x 2½" the other a very unusual zoomorphic head, 1 x 1"
4.) Large head fragment intact in itself wearing large headdress but what's unusual is cross hatched eyes. Estimated Value $250 - 400

1.) Spouted Nazca (whistle) pot from Peru in orange, black and white slip colors. choice condition 4 x 4 x 3½"
2.) Jalisco region, olla seed jar in red clay. These were buried in soil holding seeds, soil and direct watering for better crop survival. 4 x 4 x 3½" Superior condition with remnants or red slip color. As the above pot, no cracks, chips or repairs.
3.) Intriguing small pot in blackish red clay with hand pressed on clay elements creating a very distinct face. This small, single handled pot sits on three legs. Mexican region. 2½ x 2½ x 2½" with minor chipping around mouth. Estimated Value $200 - 400
