Sterner, Albert "Over There" Considered The Most Beautiful of all WWI Recruiting Posters (1863-1946). U.S. NAVY / OVER THERE. 1917. 59 x 40" American Lithographic Co., New York.In 1917, George M. Cohan composed the song that more than any other would become the anthem for the First World War: "Over There." Using the song's title, Sterner depicts a somber, strong image of Columbia, sword in hand, beneath the billowing stars and stripes, and a sky filled with curls of smoke emanating from the ships of the Navy. She is pointing a sailor to the distant shores of Europe. Poster was in very fine condition prior to archivally mounting on linen for preservation and to address scattered fold separations, masterfully restored with discreet touch ups. Also of note, this is one of the largest American WWI posters created. More information on this piece in production is available on Wikipedia. Estimate $1,000 - UP
