Lot 775
1882, $10 National Bank Note. Fr-545. Some people feel that 'Des Moines' is derived from the Indian word 'moingona' meaning river of the mounds which referred to the burial mounds that were located near the banks of the river. Others are of the opinion that name applies to the Trappist Monks (Moines de la Trappe) who lived in huts at the mouth of the Des Moines river. French voyagers referred to the river as La Riviere des Moines. The consensus seems to be that Des Moines is a variation of Moingona, Moingonan, Moingoun, Mohingona, or Moningounas, as shown on early maps. Little did you know this note has that going for it! PCGS graded Very Fine 20PPQ.

Atchison, seat of Atchison County, began to form when the natural river landing there attracted adventurers enroute to the gold fields of California in 1850. By 1859 as many as 1600 wagons would stop off at Atchison during a single day. During the same year the first telegraph message from the West to the East was dispatched from Atchison and Lincoln addressed a group here using the same speech with which he won the presidency later at Cooper Hall in New York City. In 1924 a handkerchief-dress craze hit Kansas. At Atchison over 250 dozen red and blue bandanas were sold to women who made dresses of them. Things are still hopping in Atchison, Kansas!

1882, $10 National Bank Note. Fr-484. Charter 1807 and regional letter S for "South". Nicely centered brown back, although the trimming is a little askew on the top and bottom margins since these were usually hand cut from original bank sheets of either 4 or 6 notes depending on the time period or Charter series as well as denomination set. $10 bills might have been printed four-up with the same denomination, 10-10-10-10, or sometimes, when ordered from the bank, 10-10-10-20. This lovely note happens to be the first second charter reported on the back (all others -- 6 large size being 1902 blue seals). Rare. PCGS graded Very Fine 25.
