1832 N-1 R2 VF30. Beautiful glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and choice. This cent was very skillfully made into a "box" that comes apart by inserting a fingernail into a microscopic slot on the rim. Sorry, nothing inside. We checked. United States Trade Dollars made into boxes were used to carry opium at one time. No idea what this one may have been used to carry. A nice piece that comes from a famous collection. 1846 N-14 R3 Tall Date NGC graded AU55. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. The only mark is a dull, barely visible nick on the upper half of the upright of the T in CENT. There are traces of soft dirt tucked into protected areas around the devices and I suspect a proper bath would uncover lots of natural flowline frost. Nicely struck M-LDS, die state b, with a boldly defined rim cud break under the 18. Our grade is EF45+. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but CC#4 among those known with the single rim cud break. An important cent for the collector of significant die states. Estimate Value $450 - UP

1847 N-1 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown Off-Center Mint Error. Beautiful lustrous light olive and steel brown with generous traces of faded mint red showing on both sides. A flawless cent except for a small spot of very fine carbon hidden in the hair above the R in LIBERTY. This cent was struck 25% off center to K-7 leaving the entire date off the planchet. Fortunately there are ample die markers to positively attribute this as an 1847 N-1 in E-MDS, die state b. Off-center late date large cents are rare but only a select few exist in this superior state of preservation. Our grade is MS63. A cent for the most-discriminating collector. The attribution and 25% Off-Center Mint Error feature are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

Lot 476
1847 N-13 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty steel and light chocolate brown with faded mint color covering about 15% of both sides. The surfaces are virtually flawless, but the planchet is covered with a very thin coating of lacquer or "Care" that subdues the luster and dulls the mint color that remains on the protected areas. A proper bath might be in order for this cent. A tiny horizontal nick on the lower half of the 7 in the date is the best identifying mark. Sharply struck with full details in all the stars and devices. LDS, die state d, with a small but clearly defined rim cud break over the R in AMERICA. Called MS62 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #31505. Our grade is MS62, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. Both grades may improve after removal of the coating. This cent was given to Ted Naftzger by Abe Kosoff as commission for cataloging the Admiral Bitler collection for sale in 1961, and Naftzger noted this fact on his collection envelope. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

Microscopic specks of crud can be found with a strong glass and it appears this cent has never been brushed. EDS, die state a, with fine die lines at AME and no rim cud break on the obverse. The only marks are a few microscopic ticks on the obverse and a bit of fine crud around the berry over the left side of the N in ONE. EDS. The fine diagonal die lines from the dentils at stars 11-13 are sharp. The hair at the top of the ear is a bit softly struck, as always on this variety, but the rest of the coin looks like a solid Extremely Fine. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58 (NGC label #1941088-010 included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). No spots or stains, only a few very light contact marks. The notable marks are some faint hairline scratches in the field right of star 3. Sharply struck with just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. Scarce LDS, die state e. The die line through the O in OF has been lapped off the die and the fields on the obverse are now slightly reflective. A narrow rim cud has formed over the M in AMERICA, and it is well defined on this piece. A neat die state. Tied for CC#6 of the variety but CC#2 of the late die state in the Grellman census. A third of the mint color remains visible on the obverse and half of the reverse shows bright original mint red. The only mark is a tiny, dull tick on the jawline near the ear lobe. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The blundered date (51 over inverted 18) is clear and the fields around the date and behind the portrait are covered with fine die lines. A beautiful example of this popular "Redbook" variety, and the early die state is a big plus because it shows the date blunder so clearly. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census.
