Madison, Dolley Payne (1768-1849) First Lady to President James Madison; she was a legendary hostess whose political acumen was a major asset to her husband's career. When the British were approaching to burn the White House in 1814, she insisted on saving many state papers and the famous Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington. Free franked address panel ("Free D.P. Madison"), 3" x 5" with red circular postmark, "Washington D.C. Feb. 9[n.y.]" which is addressed in her hand to "Miss Rosa Monroe Gloucester Court House Glst. County, Virginia." Light toning and foxing. An especially nice example.

Three First Ladies and A First Mother. Three In Memoriam First Day Covers Signed by Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Bess W. Truman, and Lady Bird Johnson, each on the cover commemorating her late husband. Also Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, mother of President John F. Kennedy, on a 1964 cover commemorating Count Folke Bernadotte. All very fine.
