Lot 161
1922. No D. Strong reverse. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. PQ. Popular key date and absolutely handsome with a bold strike on the obverse, no trace of the "D" mintmark, and combined with the bold reverse makes for a perfect collector coin. Rarely are these found in such lofty grades, with attractive medium brown color with a few minor streaks. Clean surfaces and highly desirable! The 1922 No D cent was created when this particular obverses die ws lapped and lapped some more, enough to remove the shallow D mintmark below the date, as production continued no one in the Denver Mint noticed the problem and it likely never would have been discovered but for the unusual fact that the Philadelphia Mint (no mintmark) never issued cents in 1922. So what happened is this, collectors with early penny boards in the 1930s began to notice that there was no place or hole for their 1922 "P" cents. Why was this? Did the board makers forget this issue? Research soon showed that NO 1922 "P" cents were issued, but here they were--several collectors had an example. Research began and showed that the Philadelphia Mint was so busy stamping out the still new Peace Silver dollars that they had no time for cent production, or to send new cent dies to the Denver Mint. Hence Denver used the old 1922-D obverse die well beyond its expected use, lapped off clash marks time and again, eventually removing the "D" mintmark! A highly collectible coin was born, and this one is certainly one of the nicer ones we've seen. Pop 64; 47 finer at PCGS for MSBN. (PCGS # 3285) Estimated Value $6,500 - UP
