Lot 193
17th Century Heraldry by Celebrated English Cartographer for The Earl of Worcester. Richard Blome (1635-1705) was a celebrated English cartographer who flourished in the second half of the seventeenth. Offered here is a heraldry for the Duke of Beaufort, a title in the Peerage of England, was created by Charles II in 1682 for Henry Somerset, 3rd Marquess of Worcester, a descendant of Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, legitimized son of Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset, a Lancastrian leader in the Wars of the Roses. The name Beaufort refers to a castle in Champagne, France (now Montmorency-Beaufort). It is the only current dukedom to take its name from a place outside the British Isles. Heraldry is hand tinted (likely much later) measuring 16 x 10" framed and matted to 22 x 16". Exquisite illustrated details within the oval and bottom portions of the heraldry that call back to the aritist's exquisite cartuches that highlight his maps. Some foxing and toning that in no way distracts and boasting fine vivid colors. Estimate Value $200 - 300

Lot 195
French 17th Century Arrest Warrant for AWOL Soldiers Signed by Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Marshal of France. Manuscript document signed "Turenne" as Marshal of France and Lieutenant General of the King's Army in Germany, one page, laid paper, 8¼ x 6½", Creutzen[ark?], Dec. 29, 1644. During the Thirty Years War, Turenne orders the Viscount of Courval to take the two soldiers who left Rüsselsheim without permission and turn them over to St. Colben. Turenne's red wax seal is present and intact. Overall toning but otherwise in fine condition. Matted with an impressive handcolored engraving of Turenne, looking much the swashbuckling adventurer; scattered foxing to background. Framed in an older wooden frame to 13¼ x 18¼"

Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675) was often called simply Turenne. He was from a prominent French Huguenot family (he later converted to Catholicism) and his mother was Dutch (her father was William of Orange). He achieved military fame, becoming one of six Marshals of France who were made Marshal General of France. After Turenne's death in battle in 1675, he was given a grand funeral and buried outside of Paris, at the Abbey of St. Denis. In 1802, Napoleon, who was an admirer and wrote about Turenne's military exploits, had his remains re-interred inside Paris's Eglise des Invalides, where Napoleon would later be interred himself. Estimate Value $300 - 500
