Byzantine Empire, Stephen, mid-6th to mid-7th cent., 21 mm., 6.11 g., nimbate bust of the Virgin facing between two crosses, holding nimbate head. of the infant Christ before her, rev. cruciform monogram of Stephanos (cf. Zacos and Veglery, Byzantine Lead Seals, 1205/1204); Bulgaria, Tzar Peter (927-970) with his wife Maria Lecapena, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Christopher Lecapenus, 18 mm., 6.44 g., facing bust of Christ with cross behind head., his r. hand raised in benediction, holding book of Gospels in l., rev. Byzantine style facing crowned busts of Peter, wearing chlamys, on l., and Maria, wearing loros, on r., holding between them long patriarchal cross with globe on shaft (Youroukova, Bulgarian Mediaeval Coins and Seals, 10).
