1913. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. Lovely light rainbow toning. Only 627 struck. Not only is the 1913 Philadelphia Mint a scarce one in business strike format, it is also among the most well-struck of the Proofs. Unlike the usual Seated Liberty half dollar Proofs from the 1880s which tended to be soft in areas such as the stars, the later (and some might say handsomer) Barber Proofs are very sharp from top to bottom, center to periphery, outside and in. Elevate your bids to make room for the expected competition.Pop 5; 3 finer, 1 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 86560) .
Estimated Value $2,100 - 2,200.

1916. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ CAC Approved. A gem example displaying brilliant white frosty mint surfaces throughout. In an OGH. Pop 72; 2 in 66+, 4 in 67 (PCGS # 6566) .

Note: Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, highly regarded today, evoked some little criticism when it made its debut. "At last we have on our coins the great American eagle in a natural, lifelike form," The Numismatist said. "As represented on the half dollar he is, as the small boy would say, 'some bird,' and his size and proportions are in keeping with the greatness and power of the country." However, countering this argument, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman chided, "The artist has made this bird a terrestrial fowl, striding or marching on the ground like a turkey-cock, and with as much dignity as one." Another critic said, "The eagle looks as though it were wearing overalls and marching through hot tar." Still another said, "Liberty in sandals taking giant strides across its face might burn her toes if she should step one millimeter nearer the rising sun."
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

1916-S. NGC graded MS-65 CAC Approved. Well struck and frosty throughout. Mostly white with some gold toning about the outer borders. In an old holder. Pop 52; 11 in 66, 1 in 67.

The first design of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar (1916) has small, rather spiky stars on the flag and with only a faint line separating the star field from the field of stripes. The red stripes are not clearly set off from the white ones by any sort of border line. The ground line from the date to the sun is softly defined and rounded at the top while the base of ray 8 from the sun is much too close to the base of ray 7. Many of these features were modified in later years.

United States silver coins of 1916 also possess unusual "textured" luster -- unusual and alluring. Such luster is remarkable for its beauty on high-end Uncirculated examples like the present coin. Compared to later issues which sport more typical mint frost, these early dates are in a class all their own. Any collector who is familiar with them may find it rewarding to add a few 1916-dated pieces to his collection.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Lot 1348
1917-D. Mint mark on reverse. PCGS graded MS-64 CAC Approved. A frosty untoned example and quite choice for the grade. Sharply struck with satiny, mattelike surfaces, a hallmark of the Liberty Walking half dollars of 1916 and 1917; in 1918 and later, the surfaces were normalized by the well-meaning mint staff, removing that rugged, coarse, and almost rustic "textured" look originally part of A.A. Weinman's design. In an OGH. Pop 147; 40 finer (PCGS # 6571) .

1918-D. NGC graded MS-64. Usual soft strike on Liberty's head with remarkably clear surfaces; all, lightly toned. The year 1918 introduced a design modification to the collar on Liberty’s dress. It was redesigned and broadened. Also, ray 8 from the sun is now centered between rays 7 & 9. Before it had been out of alignment and closer to ray 7. There is an incuse border at the top edge of the ground line from date to sun and the motto was changed to taller, thinner, more widely spaced letters. Each of these design modifications was an attempt to improve the appearance and striking quality of the coin. Pop 203; 13 in 65, 2 in 66.

1919. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ CAC Approved. A boldly struck blast white gem! A very rare coin in such lofty grade. In an OGH. In addition to being a condition rarity, '19-P Halves are also a strike rarity with the few fully struck, Gem coins being difficult to prize loose from their owners. The striking details on this handsome Gem are unconditionally bold for an early Walker, with pinpoint accuracy on the skirt lines, hand area, and head on the obverse. For its part, all of the eagle's feathers are boldly defined, while the surfaces exhibit satiny, well frosted originality throughout. Pop 18; 5 in 67 (PCGS # 6577) .

1920-D. PCGS graded MS-64. A frosty white example. The head is a soft as usual and overall, quite choice. In a 1st generation PCGS holder. With the change to 1920-dated dies the mint adjusted the design of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Liberty’s cap has been redesigned with more grooves at the back and a larger fold at the top. Below, the ground line from date to sun has been given a sharp raised edge. Finally, the outer edge of the flag curl by the knee has had a raised border added to it.

The lower mintage 1920-D Walking Liberty is scarce in such choice condition. The good judge of quality will appreciate this MS64 and take the opportunity to acquire it. Pop 106; 42 in 65, 6 in 66.

1921. ANACS graded MS-64. Light golden toning around the borders on both sides. A popular Key Date and always in demand. This is a smartly struck coin in this grade, one that is enhanced by delicate color over the frosty luster. Although this date is often seen sharp, this particular specimen is even sharper, with full clarity on Liberty's head and only minor softness on her hand. One of the key dates to the series, all 1921 dated half dollars are in demand from cadres of collectors, new and old alike. Each mint’s production plunged during the sharp economic downturn which swept the nation in 1921-22. Demand for coinage fell. Production was not needed. The three issues of 1921 became the major stumbling blocks for date collectors, and finding just the right coin with just the right look entails patience and more money than other dates. This handsome MS64 will surely find many prospective buyers. Scarce so well preserved, and difficult to obtain finer than the present specimen.

Lot 1366
1921. NGC graded MS-62. Lovely delicate golden-lilac toning. Popular Key Date. Only 246,000 pieces were struck of this scarce, key Walker, and it is rarely encountered in strict Mint State condition. While not known as a strike rarity, as other early issues are, the '21-P is very elusive with a full strike. This particular piece shows much better than average definition on the obverse, while the reverse has the usual softness on the left side of the eagle's leg up to the body. The luster on this coin is natural and appealing, being frosted and shimmering as the coin is tilted by the observer beneath a light. One small tick on the body above the hand; a little chatter in the drapery lines by the trailing leg. Originally and lightly toned.
